Kaarestan Event Space: Revitalizing History in Tehran by Persian Garden Studio
Kaarestan Event Space transforms an 80-year-old historic building into a vibrant cultural hub, blending heritage with modern design.
Kaarestan Event Space, an 80-year-old historical building in Tehran, has been transformed into a vibrant cultural hub by Persian Garden Studio. Originally the home of philanthropist Alireza Afzalipour and opera singer Fekhere Saba, this iconic building has been repurposed as a venue for art, performance, and community gatherings. The adaptive reuse preserves its historical essence while infusing it with contemporary functionality.

The Historical Context and Vision
Situated in Tehran’s cultural district, Kaarestan Event Space was acquired by a forward-thinking startup as part of their social responsibility initiative. The project aimed to reconnect the building with the urban fabric, creating a space for young talent to gather and perform while celebrating Tehran's rich artistic legacy. The southern building was redesigned as a café with transparent openings, establishing a visual connection between the street and the courtyard, inviting public engagement.

Structural Reinforcement and Redesign
To preserve the building’s historical integrity while modernizing its structure, extensive reinforcement measures were undertaken. The main building was fortified with 13-meter-deep piles, shotcrete walls, and metal mesh floors. Original spatial layouts were retained and adapted to accommodate meeting rooms, presentation spaces, focus rooms, and shared office areas. A basement performance space was added beneath the courtyard, and the existing pond was reimagined as a striking glass feature, linking the project’s layers visually and symbolically.

Cultural Inspiration and Design Elements
Drawing from Iran’s architectural heritage, the designers looked to Ali Qapu Palace in Isfahan for inspiration. Known for its terrace and cantilevered ceiling, Ali Qapu served as a model for creating framed views and layering perspectives. At Kaarestan, this concept is echoed in the cantilevered rooftop extension and glass pond, connecting the building’s historic roots with its contemporary purpose.

The Rooftop Experience
The rooftop, a focal point of the visitor experience, features a cantilevered metal roof that frames views of Tehran’s historic skyline. Visitors can observe landmarks such as Vahdat City Hall while enjoying a serene retreat above the bustling city. This elevated space offers a place for reflection, community, and connection, bridging the past and present in a single architectural gesture.

Kaarestan Event Space exemplifies the potential of architectural revitalization to honor history while fostering cultural and social engagement. Persian Garden Studio’s thoughtful design creates a layered, immersive experience that seamlessly blends Tehran’s rich heritage with contemporary needs. Kaarestan now stands as a beacon of creativity, community, and cultural preservation.
