Because the card you are saving already holds that entry. Skills, Languages Known and Links each refuse a second copy of the same thing, and the refusal appears as a line of red text inside the open form rather than as a pop-up. That is why the save can look like it did nothing at all.
The message will be one of these:
- "This skill has already been added to your profile."
- "This language has already been added to your profile."
- "This URL has already been added to your profile."
- "You already have a [site] link. You can edit the existing one instead."
Capital letters do not make it a different entry
The check ignores upper and lower case, and ignores spaces at either end. Revit, revit and " REVIT " are all the same skill. The same applies to a language, and to the address of a link.
A link is checked on two grounds
A link is refused either because that exact address is already saved, or because you already have a link for that site. One LinkedIn, one Behance, one Instagram, one personal website. If you want to point at a different page on a site you have already linked, edit the link that is there instead of adding another.
What to do
- Close the form and read down the card. The entry you are trying to add is already on it, usually further down than you expect.
- To change it, use the edit action on that existing entry. Editing an entry does not trip the check against itself, so you can save it unchanged.
- To move it, delete the old entry first, then add the new one.
Two spellings are two entries
Nothing merges entries that mean the same thing but are written differently. Rhino and Rhinoceros 3D both save, and both sit on your profile. Pick the single term you want to be found by rather than adding every variant.
You can also mark up to five skills as top skills, and that limit is separate from this one.
