Your organization's web address and how it is chosen

Can we change our organization URL on UNI, and how was the web address chosen in the first place?

Your organization's address is uni.xyz/organizations/ followed by a short name built from the title you first gave it. It is chosen once, when the organization is created, and it never changes afterwards.

That includes renaming. If you rename the organization, the page's heading changes and the address does not. There is no setting for it, no field for it in the interface, and the API refuses to accept one, so nobody on your team can change it by accident either.

How the address was built

  1. Your title at the moment of creation is lowercased, and spaces and punctuation become hyphens.
  2. The result is cut to 40 characters. A long institution name is trimmed rather than shortened intelligently, which is why some addresses stop mid-word.
  3. If an address like it already exists, a number is added to the end, and the name is cut to 38 characters first to make room. That is where an address ending in a digit comes from. It is not a duplicate account and it is not a mistake in your registration.

The upside of a fixed address

Nothing on UNI rewrites an old organization link, because no organization link ever goes stale. A link you printed on a poster, put in a syllabus or sent to a partner two years ago still resolves, whatever the organization has been renamed to since.

That is worth knowing before you plan around a change of name. The name on the page will follow, the address will not, and there is no redirect to arrange because there is nothing to redirect from.

If the address is genuinely wrong

An address built from a typo, or one cut off in an unfortunate place, is not something you can repair yourself. Write to UNI with the organization's current address and what it should be, and we will look at it. Please treat it as a request rather than a setting: changing it breaks every existing link to the organization, which is the reason it is not a self-serve control.
