Courses on UNI currently use video, reading and assignment lessons. Quizzes and final exams appear only when a course includes them; the rules below apply whenever one does.
You get a fixed number of attempts at each quiz and at the final exam: three, unless the instructor set a different number for that quiz. An attempt is spent the moment you press Start, not when you submit it. Opening a quiz to see what is in it uses one. Closing the tab, losing your connection or being called away uses one. None of them can be given back. There is no reset, not by you, not by the instructor, not by support.
So the rule worth carrying is a blunt one: do not press Start until you are ready to sit the whole thing through.
Read the header before you start
A quiz lesson states its own terms above the Start button, in the form Pass mark 70%. Attempts left: 3. The pass mark is 70% unless the instructor set another, and the attempts figure is what you have left, not what you began with.
The final exam page shows the pass mark but no attempts count, so keep track of that one yourself. It does warn you that the exam is timed: once you start, the countdown cannot be paused and the exam submits itself when the time runs out.
What an attempt does and does not survive
- Start creates the attempt and, on a timed quiz, starts the clock on the server. Your own device clock is not consulted, so pausing, reloading or changing computer does not buy time.
- Submit scores it. Grading happens on the server, and you pass by reaching the pass mark.
- Running out of time is recorded as a fail, whatever your answers were, and that attempt is spent like any other.
- An attempt you walk away from is never released. It stays open and still counts against your total.
- A quiz may carry a retry cooldown. Where one is set, starting again too soon is refused with "Retry cooldown in effect." Wait out the window, then start again.
Passing closes the sequence in your favour. Your best score stands, the quiz lesson is marked complete, and you are not asked to sit it again.
When the attempts are gone
The page reads No attempts remaining, and it will keep reading that. The consequence reaches past the quiz itself:
- A quiz lesson only completes when you pass it, so a quiz you can no longer attempt leaves your course permanently short of 100%.
- A final exam has to be passed for the course to count as complete at all.
Either way the certificate for that course becomes unreachable, because certificates are only issued on completion. This is the honest position rather than a queue you can join: nothing in the product clears used attempts.
If a quiz is one you can still take, that is the moment to be careful with it. Set aside the time, read the pass mark, then start once.
