Your notification settings are at uni.xyz/accounts/settings/notifications, signed in. The mailing-list switches at the top are email switches, one per list. They do not control the bell in the top bar and they do not control browser push. Before you spend time on them, know that several of them do not currently stop anything. A separate Organization notifications card further down controls organization updates (see below).
What each switch really controls
- Competition Newsletters works, including the submission deadline reminders. The one thing it does not stop is the approval, shortlist and results mail about your own entry: that is sent regardless, because it is the outcome of something you entered, not a newsletter. See Competition email reminders.
- Product Updates & Features works. It ends the daily round-up of new followers and new work from people you follow, the weekly note about work you saved, and product announcements.
- Promotional Emails now works: it stops the cart-abandonment reminder and the win-back email sent after a membership cancellation. Journal Newsletters now works too, for the "your work was featured" email UNI sends when a journal, publication or project you made is editorially featured. Project Newsletters, Publication Newsletters and Polls & Surveys still stop nothing today: the switch saves, and no mail changes.
- Profile & Account Notifications cannot be switched off, and the page shows it that way. Security and account mail reaches you regardless.
Organization notifications
If you manage or belong to an organization, the page has an Organization notifications card. Each row is one kind of organization update, with an In app switch (the bell) and an Email switch.
- A live switch means you can turn that channel off for that kind of update.
- A switch that is on and greyed out means the update is always sent, because it concerns your own access or the organization's standing (for example being added to or removed from an organization, a role change, or an organization being suspended or archived). The row says "Always sent."
- "not adjustable" in place of a switch means that channel has no setting for that kind of update.
If you have no organization updates to choose from, the card says so.
The frequency labels are captions, not schedules
Each row carries a chip reading "Once a month", "Once a week", "Daily" or "Once a quarter". Those are fixed text written into the page. They are not read from your account, are not saved when you save, and nothing sends mail on their timetable. Competition reminders are fired by a deadline getting close, not once a month. Read them as rough intent and nothing more.
Unsubscribe works on two of the lists
Every list email carries an unsubscribe link at the foot, and Gmail and Outlook show their own Unsubscribe button for the same messages. It switches off exactly the one list that message belongs to, works without signing in, and does not expire. If one specific email is the problem, use the link on that email rather than hunting for the matching switch.
The badge clears only when you clear it
The number on the bell counts unread notifications, and nothing marks them read for you.
- Opening the panel does not clear it. It reloads the list and re-reads the count.
- Select Mark all as read to take it to zero.
- Opening one notification clears that one and drops the count by one.
The count is read when a page loads and when you open the panel. UNI is built as several separate applications, so a tab left open elsewhere on the site keeps showing the old number until you reload it. That is a stale display, not a new notification.
