I can't log in or sign up and nothing works

The specific causes behind most sign in and sign up failures, and what fixes each one.

Most sign in problems come down to a handful of specific causes. Work through these before assuming something is broken.

You are using the wrong sign in method

The sign in page offers an email and password form, Continue with Google and Continue with LinkedIn.

If you are not sure which method you used, tell us the address and we can check from our side.

Your email address was never confirmed

Sign in is blocked until the address on the account is confirmed, and the error message says so. When that happens a Resend verification email button appears under the message on the sign in page. Use it, then check spam and any filtered tab such as Gmail's Promotions. Confirmation links are valid for 3 days, so an old one will not work and a fresh one is the fix.

Do not create a second account with a different address while you wait. Two accounts cannot be merged.

Too many failed attempts

After several wrong passwords the account is locked for a while: 15 minutes after 5 failures, an hour after 10, and 24 hours after 15. The error tells you how many minutes are left. It clears by itself, and a successful sign in clears it immediately, so wait rather than trying again in a loop.

The password reset link does not work

Reset links are valid for 3 days. If you clicked an old one, request a new reset and use that email rather than the previous one. A link also stops working once the password has been changed with it.

Password reset does not send anything at all to an account that is deactivated or banned. If you requested account deletion, your account is deactivated, which is why nothing arrives. See How to delete or deactivate your account.

You are logged out sooner than you expect

If you did not tick Remember me, the session ends when you close the browser. With Remember me ticked it lasts a day, and that day restarts every time you use the site, so regular visits keep you signed in and a fortnight away does not.

Being signed out while actively using the site, in one sitting, is different and worth reporting with your browser and roughly when it happened.

You are signed in, but the site shows old details

Your browser keeps a copy of your account details from the last time you signed in, which is why something you just bought or changed can take a moment to show up. Signing out and back in refreshes that copy. If it is still wrong afterwards, that is worth telling us about.

If none of this explains it

Some problems are specific to one account: a typo in the address it was created with, two accounts under similar addresses, or something on our side. Tell us the registered email address and exactly what happens, including any error message, a blank page or a redirect, and we will look at the account directly.
