Chintan 2020 - Contemplating Built Environment
Virtual Heritage - Creativity and Technology : A Dialogue
Overview
It is our privilege to invite you for Chintan 2020- Contemplating Built Environment: Virtual Heritage - Creativity and Technology: A Dialogue conceptualised as a panel discussion hosted by the G.D.Goenka University's School of Architecture and Planning on 29th February 2020 at G.D.Goenka University campus.
After the successful hosting of Chintan 2019, we at G.D.Goenka University’s School of Architecture & Planning, we are investigating the answers to some questions in the intra-disciplinary field of architecture & technology. The format for these ruminations is a panel discussion where diverse viewpoints will be exchanged. Two panels are envisaged, one dealing with theoretical ideas and the other with practical consequences. An audience comprising of architects- students and practitioners, technical experts from computing- software and hardware, materials and other related fields as well as academicians will interact with the panel.
Panel 1 - Theoretical interpretations of technological endeavours in architecture
- Historical developments: Are we in another Kuhnian cyclic paradigm shift? Can we draw parallels with the advent of the "machine" age, Corbusierian conceptualisation of space and Modernism? Is there an Indian contribution in this field?
- Virtual and physical: Question the idea of architecture as physical built form, the virtual imprint of architecture, the idea of heritage in virtual space, the un-built
- Cognition and reality: Mental constructs as ideation, artificial intelligence and the human mind, creativity and technology.
- Transience and permanence: heritage as a Spatio-temporal entity, the constant upgrade, extinction and birth of typologies.
Panel 2 - Practice
• Process: generative design systems
• Material: industry response to practical exigencies
• Building systems: BIM, facade simulation
• Hardware: 3D printing, fabrication
• Software: design, user interface.
The proposed format is a short 5-minute presentation by the panel speaker followed by a moderated discussion.
The event is planned as a daylong retreat at our picturesque campus with displays and interactions by our technology and industry partners. We will take questions from a virtual audience.
