Journey to the inside and outside of a city
The thesis undertakes a study focusing on bus infrastructure, particularly in the context of Aurangabad, situated centrally in Maharashtra, renowned for its historical significance and tourist attractions. The catalyst for this inquiry stemmed from the inadequacies observed in the current transit infrastructure in rural areas, which lack essential amenities for users. The aim was to redefine the perception of bus terminals in India, historically considered inferior compared to well-maintained airports. Moreover, given the significant urban footprint of transit infrastructure, the vision included envisioning them as mixed-use spaces, offering not only transit services but also serving as hubs for communal engagement, social interaction, open green spaces, and tourist destinations. Environmental considerations were paramount, thus sustainable strategies were integrated into the design, with a focus on hedonistic sustainability to enhance the overall user experience. The project is delineated into three main segments: the bus terminal and transit zone, a tourist and visitor center serving the city, and a bus depot catering to bus services and driver accommodation.
