MEASURING CHANGE THROUGH ARCHITECTURE

Change is undoubtedly the only thing we can be certain of. Like time change is constantly taking place while changing the world around us in a myriad of ways. This change can be easily observed by our eyes when we take a look around ourselves. The nature in our surroundings to the house in which we live everything depicts the change it has undergone and the kind of evolution it has experienced.

When we are passing through time this intensity of change is often missed by us, as we are constantly on the move with seldom time to stop and look back, which is why many times it takes years for us to take notice of how the subtle changes of every day have amounted into something big. And to measure this change there is no better scale than architecture;  the spaces in which we live. The architecture around us provides us with clear evidence of the change and transformation that has taken place across ages.

Where can we observe the change in our physical world?

PARIS, A CITY WHERE THE PAST STANDS TALLS

Paris, being one such iconic city of the world; has carried a dynamic transformation across decades. It is often the images of the old city;  that spark the nostalgic effect on us. The streets, the buildings to the city skyline all of them are a living evidence of the change that has taken place. Old photographs of the city spaces which are now transformed or evolved into the fabric of the new city. These photos mark the evolution of change in architecture, construction and life in general.

Cities, being multifaceted ecosystems showcase this change through a myriad of elements, from the natural resources to the ever-changing skylines. Paris has transcended across ages of change and evolution not just in parts but as a complete city. Changes have shaped and transformed the city of Paris into what it is today. Technology and scientific innovation had been some of the major catalysts of this wide change.

Can we in any way capture the essence of changing landscapes of the beautiful city of Paris?

VISUALIZE CHANGE THROUGH AN ILLUSTRATION

How can one depict such a generational change in one frame?

This question aims to generate a creative shift where this competition aims to challenge the capacity and creativity to bring change inside one single frame.

Brief: The architecture competition brief calls for a design of an illustration - that depicts the architectural change observed in the city of Paris across decades by visualising its transformation.

The illustration is supposed to convey the whole change timeline through it. The aim of the competition is to push participants to depict the architectural transformation of Paris into a single framed illustration.
