Redefining Community Architecture

The Convention Center at PSG in Neelambur, Coimbatore, designed by SD Sharma & Associates, is a dome-centric architectural marvel. Spread across 90,000 m², the center integrates functionality, aesthetics, and user-centric design to create a state-of-the-art facility for cultural and professional events.

Design Philosophy: The Power of the Dome

Embracing Context and Functionality

The client’s vision shaped the core concept: the building must preserve unobstructed views, both from within and outside the campus. The dome, a timeless architectural form, fulfills this requirement while imbuing the structure with visual grandeur.

A Geometry of Interaction

The design employs an ambulatory system—a corridor encircling the auditorium—offering seamless movement, visual access, and interaction. The corridors are illuminated by a mix of natural and artificial light, creating dynamic pathways that connect users with the space.

Architectural Highlights

The Auditorium: A Multifunctional Space

The centerpiece of the convention center is a 1,200-seat auditorium, designed for versatility. From panel discussions to dance performances and concerts, the stage accommodates diverse events. The balcony ensures optimal viewing angles, enhancing audience experience.

Integration with Surrounding Structures

The dome harmonizes with adjacent facilities, including the School of Architecture and a Museum. The linear design of the school, with its angular glazed facades, contrasts and complements the dome’s curvature, creating a cohesive architectural ensemble.

Light and Materiality

  • Natural Light: Glazed facades and strategically placed openings allow light to permeate the interior.
  • Materials: Finishes such as mica, granite, and tiles enhance durability while exuding a refined aesthetic.
  • Structural Design: Aluminum-covered rafters and beams add geometric elegance, reinforcing the dome’s architectural identity.

Spatial Organization: User-Centric Design

Lobby and Pre-Function Areas

The convention center’s lobby and pre-function spaces are thoughtfully designed to handle large crowds efficiently. These areas are well-lit and feature user-friendly layouts, ensuring comfort and ease of movement.

Service Integration

With thousands of potential users, the planning incorporates ample service areas to support events. This cohesive approach ensures operational efficiency without compromising the center’s aesthetic integrity.

The Dome: An Axis of Connectivity

Strategic Placement

The dome is strategically aligned to provide diagonal views from Avinashi Road Highway, making it a visual landmark even from a distance. Its height and scale resonate with the surrounding landscape, emphasizing its prominence.

A Symbol of Magnitude

Beyond functionality, the dome represents the grandeur of cultural and community architecture. Its seamless geometry and monumental scale establish it as a beacon of modern design in Coimbatore.

Sustainability and Longevity

Environmentally Responsive Design

The use of durable materials and natural lighting reduces maintenance needs and energy consumption. These features position the convention center as a sustainable addition to the urban fabric.

A Timeless Landmark

Blending traditional forms with contemporary materials, the convention center is designed to age gracefully, serving the community for generations to come.
