A Vision for Adaptive and Eco-Friendly Retail Spaces

GRID Store, designed by Studio Animal, is a groundbreaking retail concept located in Viladecans, Spain. Developed as the first project for Munich’s accessory and bag line, the store embodies two fundamental principles: isotropy and responsible temporality.

This modular retail space is conceived as a temporary yet immersive environment, where design and functionality seamlessly merge. The core idea revolves around an isotropic space, meaning it maintains the same properties in all directions. To achieve this, the store features a meticulously crafted 60x60 cm modular grid, extending across the floor, walls, and ceiling. Each module functions as a display unit, ensuring a visually striking and organized layout that enhances product presentation and customer experience.

Sustainable Design and Material Innovation

Emphasizing sustainable architecture, GRID Store employs a 100% recyclable construction system. The entire interior is built using honeycomb cardboard panels—a lightweight yet structurally resilient material. These 15mm panels, finished with a white stucco exterior, define the store’s distinctive textured aesthetic. The brown mesh-like structure, formed by double-layer ribs, not only reinforces the store’s identity but also showcases the raw beauty of eco-friendly materials.

A total of 120 cardboard sheets were strategically used, optimizing material efficiency while minimizing waste. Each panel was precisely cut and assembled, ensuring maximum sustainability without compromising structural integrity. The honeycomb panel system provides the necessary rigidity and load-bearing capacity, allowing it to support both the store’s own weight and the displayed products.

A New Paradigm for Temporary Retail Design

GRID Store exemplifies how innovative materials, modular construction, and circular design principles can redefine contemporary retail spaces. By prioritizing recyclable materials and a minimalist, adaptable aesthetic, Studio Animal sets a new benchmark for temporary store design.

This project is a testament to how sustainable architecture, modular interiors, and eco-conscious construction can shape the future of retail environments, offering both functional efficiency and environmental responsibility.
