Residence at Edavanna by ZERO STUDIO: A Contemporary Kerala Home Rooted in Tradition
Residence at Edavanna by ZERO STUDIO blends traditional Kerala charm with modern design, featuring courtyards, greenery, and family-focused spatial planning.
The Residence at Edavanna, designed by ZERO STUDIO, is a modern interpretation of traditional Kerala homes from the 1980s. Set on a generous plot, the residence emphasizes connection with nature, family heritage, and a lifestyle that blends rural charm with contemporary comfort.

Context and Inspiration
Nestled within a landscape reminiscent of nostalgic Kerala residences, the home draws inspiration from the quaint, serene villages often depicted in Sathyan Anthikkad movies. These villages are characterized by open plots, lush greenery, and a deep connection with nature. The clients, a family of four, desired a residence that would keep them close to both of their parents, allowing for familial bonds while enjoying the independence of their own home.
By placing the house away from the property boundaries, ZERO STUDIO created ample frontage, allowing gardens, local trees, and native flora to flourish. The backyard seamlessly connects to the husband’s ancestral home, creating a sense of continuity and expansion beyond mere walls.

Thoughtful Spatial Planning
The residence is designed with a ground-floor-centric layout, housing the majority of functional spaces. The first floor accommodates only one bedroom and a utility area, maintaining the house’s openness and accessibility.
The planning follows an axial organization, with courtyards and passageways dividing the home into functional quadrants. This design subtly differentiates between private, semi-private, and social areas, using minimal walls while maximizing spatial clarity.

Courtyards and Green Integration
Central courtyards are a defining feature of the home. They not only introduce greenery into the interiors but also create intimate niches for relaxation, reflection, or stargazing. These spaces foster a connection with nature, while enhancing ventilation and natural light throughout the residence.

Material Palette and Interiors
The material palette reflects warmth, simplicity, and local craftsmanship. Wood, glass, and bespoke fittings are thoughtfully integrated to balance functionality and aesthetic appeal. The interiors feel humble yet personalized, carefully tailored for the family’s lifestyle and needs.
