Our proposal, HEx-Stadium, envisions an innovative transformation of stadium architecture by repurposing its extensive infrastructure into a dynamic, adaptable public space. Rather than being limited to traditional sporting events, this design reimagines the stadium as a vibrant, multifunctional urban hub with potential for future applications, including residential projects, markets, and urban farming initiatives.

Adaptive Stadium Design for a Sustainable Future

The project strategically reconfigures the stadium’s form to accommodate a honeycombed stairway network, which seamlessly integrates semi-public terraces with a network of stairways. Formerly used as bleachers, these terraces evolve into housing units, fostering a sense of community and urban interaction.

The transformation plan introduces vertical circulation that connects various spatial programs, allowing easy access to public and private zones. The outer skin of the structure follows the honeycombed design, incorporating perforations at the ground level to mark entrances, ensuring accessibility and fluid movement throughout the space.

A New Perspective on Stadium Utilization

The first phase of this transformation focuses on semi-residential development, fostering a balance between private living spaces and public amenities. The second phase extends this concept into the football field itself, which evolves into a pop-up market, enhancing economic and social activity within the structure. The stadium’s tensile roof structure not only offers aesthetic value but also serves as a functional shading element for outdoor activities.
