Small Apartment Renovation in Buenos Aires: A Case Study of Lavalle Project by Proyecto Triangular
This article showcases the Lavalle project, a small apartment renovation in Buenos Aires by Proyecto Triangular, focusing on space optimization and material use.
In the heart of Buenos Aires, Argentina, the Lavalle project by Proyecto Triangular stands as a testament to innovative small apartment renovations. Completed in 2022, this 32 m² apartment in the historic Balvanera neighborhood showcases how thoughtful design can transform a compact space into a functional and stylish residence. This article delves into the renovation process, design solutions, and material choices that redefine living in a metropolitan setting.

Background: The Challenge of Small Spaces
The Original State of the Apartment
Before Proyecto Triangular intervened, the apartment was a series of poorly connected spaces with limited natural light. Situated in a building from the 1930s with heritage character, it was crucial to respect the original architecture while adapting the apartment for modern living.

Objective of the Renovation
The main goal was to create a space that could serve both as a permanent residence and a professional workspace for a textile designer. This required maximizing natural light, enhancing spatial integration, and providing ample storage within the confined footprint of the apartment.

Design Solutions for Maximizing Space
Reconfiguring the Layout
Proyecto Triangular introduced three main structural elements that redefined the apartment's layout. These multifunctional pieces extended almost to the ceiling, offering a variety of storage options and defining the kitchen, bathroom, and living areas.

Dual-Function Spaces
A highlight of the design is a two-position door that transforms the bedroom into a dressing room or isolates it for privacy. This flexibility is key to living comfortably in a small space.

Material Palette: Blending Tradition and Modernity
Preserving Historical Elements
The renovation uncovered and preserved the apartment's original materials, such as exposed brick walls and wood imprints in the concrete. These textures were unified with white paint to brighten the space while celebrating its history.

Contemporary Materials for Light and Warmth
Polished micro cement flooring and translucent polycarbonate panels were used to enhance the sense of continuity and light throughout the apartment. Guatambu wood storage units added warmth, and opal glass in the bathroom ensured privacy while allowing light to filter in.

A Model for Small Apartment Renovation in Buenos Aires
The Lavalle project by Proyecto Triangular exemplifies how creative design solutions and a thoughtful material palette can transform a small, historical apartment into a functional, modern living space. This renovation not only maximizes the apartment's limited square footage but also respects its architectural heritage, making it a shining example of small apartment renovation in Buenos Aires.
