Connecting Communities Through Architecture

AgriFlex is an architectural concept that redefines how rural and urban environments interact. Designed by İrem Büyükpolat, this project — a People’s Choice Award entry of the Farm to CITY competition — envisions a sustainable marketplace that strengthens community ties while promoting eco-friendly and flexible urban design. It embodies the essence of sustainable architecture design by merging production, culture, and human connection within a single adaptive space.

Design Concept: A Fusion of Function and Flexibility

Located in Roeselare, Belgium, AgriFlex sits at the intersection of farmland and city blocks, bridging two distinct ecosystems. The design is organized along a linear axis, where transparent greenhouses represent natural agricultural production on one side, while urban-style functional modules — including a café, workshops, and restrooms — line the other. Between these two wings lies an open, adaptable marketplace that transforms into a lively public plaza.

The project’s flexible modular architecture allows the space to host farmers’ markets, exhibitions, or seasonal festivals with ease, reinforcing its dual identity as both a commercial and cultural venue.

Sustainability and Material Innovation

AgriFlex embodies environmentally conscious architecture through material efficiency and multi-functional adaptability. Its modular frames are made of steel, while lightweight aluminum composite panels add durability and a contemporary aesthetic. These panels function as movable units that can unfold into seating, display counters, or shading elements — optimizing spatial use without increasing material consumption.

The transparent greenhouse not only enhances daylight penetration and natural ventilation but also educates visitors about sustainable cultivation methods. This design synergy demonstrates how sustainability in architecture can be seamlessly integrated into daily life.

The modular system adapts to population density and event scale, allowing countertop numbers and spatial divisions to be reconfigured. The spatial rhythm created by alternating transparent and solid surfaces enhances visibility and social engagement, while circulation paths encourage informal encounters — transforming AgriFlex into a living social hub rather than a static architectural object.
