ARCHIVED MASS: A Fusion of Art and Architecture in Seodaemun-Gu
AGIT STUDIO revitalizes an old building into ARCHIVED MASS, blending art gallery and residential space.
AGIT STUDIO Transforms an Old Hardware Store into a Modern Gallery Space
In Seodaemun-Gu, South Korea, AGIT STUDIO has masterfully renovated a three-story mixed-use building, infusing life into a structure that once housed an old hardware store on its first floor, with residential spaces above. Completed in 2022, the project, known as ARCHIVED MASS, encompasses an area of 186 m² and represents a significant contribution to the district's evolving artistic landscape. This transformation has not only created a new art gallery and a single-family house but also respected the building's unique history and architectural symmetry with its twin structure.

Embracing Historical Context and Architectural Integrity
The renovation of ARCHIVED MASS was driven by a deep respect for the building's narrative, particularly its mirrored relationship with an adjacent twin building. This unique architectural feature influenced the redesign of the front façade, which now showcases smaller windows that align with the new aesthetic while preserving the essence of the original openings. The result is a façade that narrates the building's storied past through its textured surfaces.

A Canvas for Artistic Expression
Inside, the main gallery space on the first floor has been stripped back to its structural bones, revealing the raw beauty of crooked concrete beams and juxtaposing them with new plasterboard walls. This deliberate contrast highlights the building's transformation from a mundane commercial space to a sanctuary of artistic expression. The basement gallery underwent a similar metamorphosis, where the removal of old finishes unveiled a canvas for new artistic endeavors, marked by distinctive saw blade patterns on the walls.

The Rebirth of a Backyard
The project also extended to the outdoor space, where a neglected backyard was reimagined into a tranquil retreat for visitors. By stripping the cement wall back to its original state and introducing a concrete bench and flower bed, AGIT STUDIO transformed this area into an integral part of the gallery's experience, emphasizing the potential of reinterpreted existing elements to create beauty and meaning.

A Testament to Adaptive Reuse in Architecture
ARCHIVED MASS by AGIT STUDIO stands as a testament to the power of adaptive reuse in architecture, proving that buildings with a rich history can be transformed into vibrant spaces for contemporary use. This project not only enriches the cultural fabric of Seodaemun-Gu but also serves as an inspiration for future renovations in urban landscapes.
This exploration of ARCHIVED MASS by AGIT STUDIO delves into the intricacies of art gallery renovation, showcasing how a thoughtful architectural intervention can breathe new life into old structures. Through the lens of this project, we witness the transformative potential of architecture to create spaces that celebrate both the past and the present, contributing to the cultural and artistic enrichment of urban communities.
