Bauhaus is not a design approach. It is a movement. As Bauhaus is widely applied in various forms in the present, it is also something that holds a big part in the history of design industry. It evolves from architecture, arts, graphic design and more, which makes it hard to distinguish when something is of Bauhaus influence.

This is Baus - Stop, Simplified.

Dissecting Bauhaus in its simplest form and objective influenced the Baus – Stop’s design concept – creating a translated physical representation of the Bauhaus movement through highlighting its element’s basic function, materials, and being true to its principle. A space where people can understand Bauhaus through aesthetic and experience. Through research and case studies about Bauhaus and bus stops around the world, a bus stop, in its essence is a dedicated space where people wait, stand or sit before the bus arrives. A space where people find themselves killing time, an avenue to introduce new information to its users. Our team experimented with different types of forms and approaches in creating the right balance of art and functionality for this project without overlooking and still maximizing the user experience in a bus stop.

The first approach was too functional, lacked purpose and aesthetics. It also sacrificed the comfort of the users and restricted their movement within the bus stop.

The second approach, after a couple of reviews was too focused on aesthetics and wasted opportunities for users to have a more comfortable experience.

The third approach disregarded the safety of the users and limited the access towards the bus by putting solid concrete in front of the structure.

After going through the iterations one by one and identifying the approaches that were not true to the principles of Bauhaus, we have finally achieved the final form of the Baus – Stop project. The form of the Baus – Stop ended up being divided into three (3) independent geometric components – the walls, the roof and the glass box. These components consist of materials that are distinctive in Bauhaus Architecture and each serves a purpose in making the Baus - Stop functional through their basic uses as a material.

The first component of the Baus – Stop is the wall. Two (2) parallel walls made out of concrete were incorporated in the design. The rear wall, besides acting as a support, was also provided for maps and infographics about the area and a space for art installations of artists in the community were also provided. The second component is the roof, it is made out of glass and steel materials. The provision of this is mainly for climate protection. The third component is the glass box. The glass box, besides being an additional protection, was situated on top of the structure to create a focal point in the design serving as an iconic landmark for the area. It also controls temperature, specially for countries with warm climate.

The components and materials take a big role in the expansion of Baus – Stop around the world. The components can be modified according to where the Baus – Stop will be located and the demand of the community. The modifications may be of size and orientation of these 3 elements. The materials that were used are three of the most widely used construction materials in the world. The use of glass, concrete, and steel as an art while remaining true to their functions and the use of modular components for mass production in a 141 sqm bus stop encapsulates the essence of the Bauhaus movement.

600x600mm Grid Layout.

A 600x600 mm tile grid was provided to guide the layout of our Baus – Stop’s floor plan. This was incorporated to efficiently create a space that caters to many while still providing comfort to its users. Through this, the space was maximized and prevented wasted space. The layout consists of various amenities and furniture for its users and can also be modified depending on the demand of the site and community and can also be expanded and scaled down.

This project was highly influenced by each design objective. Ideation, balance, landmark, and replicability, objectives that highlight Bauhaus. Baus – Stop, Simplified is an attempt to encompass Bauhaus in its simplest form. Art with function, design with reason.

Bauhaus is not a design approach. It is a movement.
