Adaptive Micro-Living Through Modular Design

At its core, the IWI module is a transformable living unit that responds dynamically to user needs. Designed as a compressible and expandable architectural system, the module can shift between a compact furniture-like form and a fully functional habitable space. When compressed, it behaves like a storage unit or shelving system, preserving surrounding outdoor space. When expanded, it unfolds into a versatile interior environment capable of supporting multiple functions such as a home office, yoga studio, guest room, workshop, or relaxation area.

This flexibility makes IWI a prime example of adaptive architecture, catering to modern lifestyles that demand multifunctional and space-efficient solutions.

Digital Fabrication and Sustainable Construction

The structure is constructed entirely from wood using CNC (Computer Numerical Control) milling, enabling precise digital fabrication and efficient production. This method ensures high accuracy, reduced material waste, and the potential for mass production, making the module scalable and accessible.

The use of timber not only enhances the module’s sustainability but also contributes to a warm and natural interior atmosphere. Additionally, the system is designed for easy assembly and disassembly, allowing it to be relocated or reconfigured with minimal environmental impact.

Intelligent Spatial Organization and Functional Efficiency

The IWI module is composed of two main components connected by a folding, accordion-like structure. The rear module acts as a fully integrated service core, containing essential furniture and infrastructure such as tables, chairs, storage, shelving, electrical systems, lighting, and even a hidden sink.

Every element is meticulously designed to the millimeter, ensuring optimal use of space without compromising usability. The front module serves as a მოძრable entrance, sliding on wheels to expand or compress the structure while maintaining spatial fluidity.

This intelligent design supports both on-grid and off-grid living, making the module suitable for diverse environments, from urban terraces to remote landscapes.

Contextual Integration and User Experience

In its current installation on a terrace in northern Quito, the IWI module is oriented westward, offering views of the Pichincha volcano. The project demonstrates how micro-architecture can integrate seamlessly with natural surroundings, enhancing the user experience through visual and spatial connectivity.

Configured as a workspace for two people, the module includes all necessary amenities, including dual workstations, storage, and a compact kitchenette. The design allows users to control the balance between indoor and outdoor space: fully extending for enclosed use, partially opening for hybrid functionality, or compressing entirely to reclaim the terrace.
