House 720 Degrees: A Circular Dwelling Framing Landscape, Time, and Dual Worlds

Located in a remote valley in Tehuastepec, Mexico, the House 720 Degrees by Fernanda Canales is a bold architectural exploration of geometry, perception, and environmental responsiveness. Conceived as a spatial and optical device, the house expands the conventional 360-degree field of vision into a doubled experience: offering a continuous dialogue between interior and exterior, landscape and enclosure, day and night.

At the heart of the project lies a circular plan organized around a central courtyard. This configuration functions as both a spatial anchor and a conceptual core, allowing the house to operate in two distinct modes. During the day, the building opens outward, framing panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and a distant volcano. At night, it turns inward, focusing attention on the courtyard, creating a more introspective and protected environment. In this way, the house behaves like a solar clock: registering time through light, shadow, and orientation.


The project is not a singular structure but a composition of three volumes. The main circular house forms the primary living space, while a detached studio or guest room provides additional accommodation. A third rectangular volume contains service areas, extra bedrooms, and storage. This fragmentation responds to the steep topography of the site and allows the architecture to adapt gently to the terrain while preserving existing vegetation.

Within the circular volume, the spatial organization is both rational and fluid. Rectangular rooms: such as bedrooms, bathrooms, and the kitchen, are arranged along the inner edge, while the curved perimeter is reserved for circulation and transitional spaces. These curved zones extend outward into terraces and gardens, blurring the boundary between built form and landscape.

Flexibility is a key aspect of the design. Large foldable windows, movable screens, and layered openings allow spaces to shift between openness and privacy. Each room is connected to multiple orientations, ensuring cross-ventilation and varied visual experiences. This adaptability enables the house to respond dynamically to changing environmental conditions and user needs.


The project negotiates a delicate balance between exposure and protection. Located in a climate with extreme daily temperature fluctuations and seasonal rainfall, the house is designed to shelter its inhabitants while maintaining a strong connection to the outdoors. Its walls act as membranes, mediating between contrasting conditions: forest and prairie, wet and dry seasons, interior and exterior spaces.

Materiality reinforces this relationship with the site. The building is constructed using a mixture of local soil and concrete, resulting in a textured finish that echoes the Ring and character of the surrounding landscape. This earthbound approach allows the house to blend seamlessly into its environment, reducing its visual impact despite its large scale.


Craftsmanship and local production play an important role in the project. Much of the furniture and lighting was created on-site using local materials, embedding the house within its cultural and material context. This approach not only supports local economies but also enhances the authenticity of the design.


Sustainability is integral to the house’s operation. It functions entirely off-grid, generating electricity through solar panels and harvesting rainwater for daily use. Hydronic radiant flooring provides efficient heating, while passive strategies such as cross-ventilation and orientation reduce the need for mechanical systems. These features ensure comfort while minimizing environmental impact.


Ultimately, House 720 Degrees is an architecture of duality and transformation. It is simultaneously open and enclosed, expansive and intimate, grounded and fluid. Through its circular geometry and responsive design, it creates a living environment that evolves with time, climate, and human activity, an architecture that does not merely occupy the landscape but becomes part of its continuous cycle.
