House in Front of the Park – A Modern Residential Masterpiece in San Rafael
House in Front of the Park by atelier industrial features modular metal construction, local materials, and fluid interior–exterior connections in San Rafael.
Architects: Leonardo Valdivieso, atelier industrial
Located in the heart of San Rafael, Argentina, the House in Front of the Park by atelier industrial is a contemporary residence that harmoniously integrates modern architecture with the surrounding natural environment. Completed in 2022 and spanning 600 m², the home faces the iconic Hipólito Yrigoyen Park, the city’s largest and most significant green space, offering a unique dialogue between urban life and nature.

Innovative Architectural Composition
The residence is conceived through the articulation of two distinct volumes. The primary volume, defined by a 6 x 6-meter grid system, houses all the essential functions of the home. This modular approach creates a structured, yet flexible spatial organization, emphasizing repetition and simplicity while allowing adaptability for future modifications.

Adjacent to the main structure, a secondary volume serves as a grill and social area, fully aligned with the property boundary on Álvarez Condarco Street. This volume not only accommodates social activities but also frames the house’s main entrance toward the park. Complemented by patios and a metal pergola, it creates functional parking areas for residents and visitors, seamlessly integrating social and private functions.

Structural Excellence and Materiality
The home employs a metal construction system, taking full advantage of the material’s strength and versatility. Prefabricated concrete slabs, measuring 1.20 x 6 meters, are strategically placed within the metal framework, exemplifying modern modular construction. The use of repetition and modularity ensures both efficiency and architectural coherence.

Privacy and environmental harmony are achieved through carefully selected enclosures. The exterior walls feature stone cladding, establishing a natural dialogue with the park and surrounding landscape. Locally sourced bricks, extracted approximately 20 kilometers from the site, form the interior enclosures. This choice not only respects local building traditions but also responds to the climatic conditions of San Rafael, creating a sustainable, context-aware design.

Connection Between Interior and Exterior
The residence’s square floor plan organizes spaces around a central void, highlighted by a mature tree, serving as the focal point of the home. Brick lattice enclosures on the first floor act as visual filters, promoting a fluid connection between the interior and exterior. This design strategy ensures continuous engagement with the surrounding environment, maximizing natural light, ventilation, and scenic views of the tree canopy.

Functional Layout
The ground floor is dedicated to public and semi-public spaces, including living, dining, and social areas, ensuring openness and connectivity. Private spaces, such as bedrooms, occupy the upper floor, providing necessary privacy without sacrificing the visual and spatial connection to the outdoors. Overall, the architectural approach balances aesthetic appeal, functional efficiency, and environmental sensitivity, contributing positively to the urban fabric of San Rafael while offering comfortable, adaptable living spaces.

Sustainable and Contextual Design
House in Front of the Park exemplifies the thoughtful integration of sustainable architecture, modular construction, and regional building traditions. By utilizing local materials, prioritizing adaptable spaces, and connecting with the natural environment, the project demonstrates a modern approach to residential design that respects both context and lifestyle.
