House + Studio by NAW Studio presents a sophisticated approach to modern house with studio design, seamlessly integrating residential and workspace elements. Situated in Da Nang, Vietnam, the project balances architectural aesthetics with functional zoning, addressing both spatial independence and harmonious coexistence within a single structure.

Overcoming Site Challenges with Smart Design

Positioned on a 180 m² plot along My Thi Street, the house faces an east-northeast orientation with a direct view of a church and a cemetery. These environmental factors posed challenges related to privacy, spiritual beliefs, and climatic conditions. NAW Studio responded with a thoughtful design that strategically shields the home from direct exposure while maintaining openness through curved architectural forms and microclimatic solutions.

A Dual-Living Concept for Independent Households

A fundamental requirement for the project was to create two separate living units within the same house, ensuring both privacy and connectivity. The resulting design divides the structure into two self-contained apartments:

• The first apartment spans the ground and second floors, featuring an internal staircase for circulation.
• The second apartment occupies the third floor and has its own independent entrance via an external staircase.

This vertical organization enables separate access while fostering interaction within shared spaces when needed.

The Role of Curved Architecture in Spatial Fluidity

Curved architectural elements define both the facade and interior, establishing a dynamic spatial flow that enhances movement and visual interest. The exterior’s sculpted curves serve multiple functions, from controlling sunlight penetration to creating a visually striking street presence. Inside, curved partitions guide circulation, subtly defining different functional zones without the need for rigid enclosures.

Material Palette and Interior Atmosphere

The interior design emphasizes simplicity and warmth through a neutral palette of white, gray, and natural wood tones. These colors not only enhance spatial clarity but also reflect the homeowner’s preference for understated elegance. Strategically placed lighting elements complement the textures, reinforcing depth and ambiance in each living space.

The "Wind Trap" Microclimate Solution

Vietnam’s tropical climate necessitated an innovative approach to ventilation and thermal comfort. NAW Studio implemented a "Wind Trap" system—a passive cooling strategy that optimizes air circulation. The design integrates horizontal wind shutters with a vertical skylight, creating a pressure difference that facilitates continuous airflow. Fresh air enters through designated openings, flows through the interior, and escapes via the skylight, ensuring a naturally ventilated and thermally comfortable environment.

Green spaces are strategically positioned within the air circulation pathways, acting as natural filters that enhance indoor air quality. These biophilic design elements further contribute to the home’s sustainability and well-being.

As the name suggests, House + Studio is designed to accommodate both residential and professional functions.
