Narrow House Design Innovations in Vietnam: A Deep Dive into House 3.5 x 17 by Story Architecture
Exploring House 3.5 x 17 in Vietnam, showcasing innovative design solutions for narrow urban living spaces by Story Architecture.
In the bustling urban environment of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, House 3.5 x 17 stands as a testament to architectural creativity and efficient use of space on a narrow plot. Designed by Story Architecture for a family seeking a blend of nostalgia and modern convenience, this 59 m² residence showcases how narrow house design innovations can transform limited urban spaces into comfortable, functional homes. This article explores the unique design strategies employed in House 3.5 x 17.

Maximizing Space on a Narrow Plot
The Challenge of Limited Space
The primary challenge in designing House 3.5 x 17 was the narrow plot size, a common scenario in Vietnam's urban areas. The family's extensive wishlist, including a swimming pool, elevator, parking space, and multiple bedrooms with private bathrooms, required creative architectural solutions to make the most of the available area.

Efficient Layout and Design Solutions
The ground floor accommodates parking for cars and motorbikes, seamlessly integrating the living and worship areas, with a skylight enhancing the sanctity of the space. Strategic placement of stairs and an elevator at the house's rear maximizes the usable area on each floor, demonstrating innovative narrow house design principles.

Incorporating Natural Light and Ventilation
Creating Airy and Light-Filled Spaces
A key aspect of the design is the incorporation of skylights and glass-walled bathrooms, which ensure that natural light permeates the home, creating a sense of spaciousness. Large balconies for each bedroom not only provide private outdoor spaces but also facilitate natural ventilation, crucial in the humid climate of Ho Chi Minh City.

The Use of Traditional Materials
The house features wind encaustic tiles and ancient bricks, repurposed from old houses to cover the back of the staircase and the facade of the atrium. This not only adds a touch of nostalgia but also supports sustainable design by reusing materials. The interior's rustic wood tones further enhance the warm and intimate atmosphere of the home.

Embracing Modern Amenities in a Traditional Context
Integrating Modern Features
Despite the narrow plot, the house boasts modern amenities like a rooftop terrace with a laundry area and a small swimming pool, offering views of the city center. This blend of modern features with traditional design elements exemplifies the innovative approach to narrow house design in Vietnam.
House 3.5 x 17 by Story Architecture is a prime example of narrow house design innovations in Vietnam, offering valuable insights into making the most of limited urban spaces. Through clever layout planning, integration of natural light and ventilation, and the use of traditional materials, this project successfully meets a modern family's needs while retaining a sense of nostalgia and connection to Vietnamese heritage.
