The Panelak Apartment in Bratislava, Slovakia, redesigned by Kilo and Honc in 2022, presents a thoughtful approach to sustainable apartment renovation within a typified 1960s slab block structure. Covering 76 square meters, the project challenges outdated spatial configurations and reimagines them to suit contemporary lifestyles, particularly for young families navigating rising real estate demands.

Rethinking Panelák Living for Modern Lifestyles
Originally designed with rigid and compartmentalized layouts, panelák apartments reflect a past era where functionality often overshadowed flexibility. The existing space lacked openness, natural light, and spatial fluidity. Each room was enclosed, creating a disconnected living experience both visually and acoustically.
Kilo and Honc approached the renovation as a process of adaptive reuse and spatial reconfiguration, aiming to redefine how inhabitants interact with their home environment. By addressing generational shifts in lifestyle and family dynamics, the project introduces a more flexible and connected living arrangement.

Working Within the Structural Framework
The apartment is organized around a structural skeleton-panel system with a 3.9 x 3.9-meter grid. Rather than treating this framework as a limitation, the architects reinterpret it as a guiding boundary rather than a restrictive element.
Strategic interventions, including carefully placed openings, disrupt the rigid layout. These modifications allow light to flow freely between spaces, creating visual connections and enhancing depth.
