PROJECT AREA

The project area has been selected in the city of Istanbul, which is one of the cultural and industrial centers, that is seriously migrated(has been migrated seriously). Levent, the chosen area, is a business district where many business centers predominantly rise. As the structuring in the region increased, the number of users increased, making this region a critical point in terms of transportation. In this zone, where the subway is used as the main means of transportation, the exits of the subway are directly associated with the basement floors of most of the skyscraper so that the user can be transferred to the buildings without leaving the closed pedestrian circulation network of the metro. Open and closed public meeting areas are inadequate to fulfill the requirements of high-rise users in the region. In this context, taking into account the existing dynamics of the region, architecture has been designed that is attached to the metro, which is an important transportation system for Istanbul, and carries the transportation network from horizontal to vertical. For this reason, the chosen place is closest to the Levent metro station.

●What was the concept behind the project?

Components such as transportation, streets and public spaces, which exist in the current urban life that develop horizontally, is constructed by turning the axis of the city to the vertical in the proposal design. In the project, it serves the main spine carrier and transportation by connecting to the existing metro line. Around the designated spine, places of association with live-learn have been created. The lines that make up the main axes of the vertical city are differentiated with their red-green-blue colors. The red line refers to live, the blue one refers to learn, and the green one refers to togetherness. The aim is to link these two different functions with spaces of coexistence, which are common cultural and social interaction. Live and learn users come together at cultural and social green line meeting places. These three lines develop vertically, they intersect in places. While these intersections allow them to get support from each other as carriers, they also strengthen the relationship between transportation layers as transfer stops.

● What was the intent behind the organization of elements across various levels (Architectural, Site, Urban)?

The metro network, which forms the main spin of the vertical city, is the basic transportation system for the building and connects the programs at various heights. Live, learn and sticky units adhering to these structures are connected to the streets on the horizontal.

The concept of 'street', on the other hand, has been designed to surround the structure as corridors connecting the live, learn and association spaces horizontally. Streets in the corridor structure create opportunities for interaction and reveal new forms of relationship between programs. The network system surrounding the Rotate 90° works as a street in places and as a shaft of the skyscraper in places. These shafts wrap the entire structure, allowing electricity and water distribution.

The lines turn into stops at the points where they intersect with each other, and they are in vertical fluid, continuous motion and jointed at every stops they touch. Live and learn stops, where this fluidity is formed, open to squares, meeting areas and green terraces. The squares with different associated levels are defined; It connects live learn spaces as well as providing space for meeting and sharing.

 ● What is the expansion plan of the project?

Three lines will form the main structure of the building. These lines are able to grow up through the sky. Furthermore, the masses will adhering on the axles so the main masses are open to growth and development. (see sheet 2)

● How will the project transform with the passing time? Etc.

Building scenario enables horizontal development with minor spaces (sticky units; classrooms, rooms, laboratories, residences…) attached to the major spaces such as art center, library, science center. They can multiply in case of need like mushrooms. Thus, the building can continue to grow both vertically and horizontally.

● Which methods of design investigation?

During the design process, new methods were sought for both structural and technical solutions (water, ventilation, etc.) between various residential and building units. Structural solutions of Rotate 90 ° (water, ventilation, electricity ..) create the external structure. With these solutions, it is aimed to produce energy and water by using the characteristics of the context in which the building is located. For this; Using the temperature difference between the highest point of the building and the ground, it was used when the wind energy can be converted to water, generating electricity from solar energy. In this way, the sustainability of the building has been feature.

● How was the programme condensed into final?

By identifying the live and learn common programs, collecting the users association spaces, ensuring interaction, the two programs have been intertwined. Live and learn concepts are provided with common cultural and social spaces they use the open green space of coexistence between users. Sticky units, which are expressed as minor buildings, are connected to each other by street and corridors.

● What/How were the materials chosen?

It consists of main carrier steel system. The bearing strength is increased by supporting each other at the intersection of the three main steel axles. The masses attached to the main carrier system are constructed with materials such as high strength steel and light glass.

The current hyperloop system is recommended as an alternative to the metro, which is the main transportation network of the city. It is maden from carbonfiber (the new hyperloop pod prototype made of carbonfiber called SGL carbon).

● How was a specific objective attempted to be met?

Live and learn, keeping changes to a minimum of mass, squares, residential units can be functionalized for programs such as the sticky gaps and spaces were defined. In addition to all these, energy generation models have been developed by using the features of the context for a sustainable city.
