Potable seating design challenge.
Overview
Travelling with comfort
Theoretically, means of public transportation like a city bus, metro or train are considered the best for commuting in terms of economic, environmental and other planning considerations.
However, there are only a few examples where it is the most willful choice of commuters.
An ever-growing population served by limited public transit capabilities can make the commutes longer - slower - stressful.
These issues have a different magnitude with varying demographics(especially the elderly and children). Increasing seats, more buses, frequent metros are there - and will exist. But can you design something like a portable seating which can ease our distress while commuting?
For example
Can the architectural/product intervention serve as a portable seating, or something to lean on, or give us shade, or maybe as simple as make long commutes fun, or make waiting a little less boring, or make us socially more connected? or you can come up with something new altogether.
The Portable Seating Design Challenge
Can you think of a solution beyond seating for this architecture competition?
Can you make standing less tiring?
Can you make something multipurpose?
Can it shoulder the bags we carry every day?
Can it be trendy?
Can it be super easy to carry?
Can it be seamlessly integrated into our daily commute? Can this solution be compatible with other modes of commute as well?
Judging parameters
-
The issue to Innovation:
- How well is the design conceived within the limited constraints and laid down clearly in the process? How relevant the issue is to the competition brief?
-
The adaptability of Solution:
- How adaptable is the design solution to different situations? OR How much it can fit itself - to a number of conditions in a particular scenario?
-
Compatibility:
- Considering physical dependencies in public transit cannot be completely avoidable - how compatible is the design to various other transit modes as well?
-
Ergonomics:
- How ergonomically fit is the solution is for the selected designed user group? How fit the solution is for extended user groups as well?
-
Functionality:
- How functionally usable is the urban solution? Does it perform the basic tasks it is designed for? How useful the end product is?
-
Portability:
- How portable is the design? There are no size constraints- but how hassle-free is the portable solution to carry around? Choice of materials will also change this aspect.
Awards and Prizes for the competition

About Boun
BOUN Serves as a unit block for UNI in the field of furniture design. It serves as a platform for experimentation and conceptual exchange of ideas for furniture designs happening at various levels. The program intends to get designers from around the world and encourage them to share their extraordinary design ideas. Through our furniture design competition at BOUN, we intend to create a dialogue among designers where they have full freedom to create contextual and user-centric design. Our furniture design awards will identify and acknowledge young and budding designers from across the globe. This approach towards design would serve in refurbishing the profession’s identity and will help the product to reach the masses through our leading media and industry partners.
