Located in the vibrant coastal city of João Pessoa, Brazil, the BA’RA Hotel, designed by Plan:b arquitectos, redefines hospitality through architecture that blends seamlessly with the tropical environment. Completed in 2022, the 6,197 m² hotel features 126 guest rooms ranging from 22 to 72 m², each carefully designed to capture panoramic ocean views and natural breezes.

Context & Urban Integration

The project sits along Avenida Cabo Branco, a lively beachfront avenue that serves as a hub for cyclists, walkers, athletes, and public festivities. With municipal height restrictions limiting new buildings near the beach to just five levels, the architects responded with a U-shaped plan that not only respects the urban scale but also creates a semi-public central courtyard. This open space becomes an active extension of city life, hosting cultural events, social gatherings, and hotel functions.

Design Concept & Spatial Experience

The entry sequence is a carefully orchestrated journey: guests cross a canopy of metal pergolas and lush hanging gardens before descending to the naturally lit lobby and restaurant, located at a lower level. The symmetrical layout organizes rooms along both sides of the U-shaped volume—some facing outward to the beach and cityscape, others oriented toward the serene central courtyard.

To maximize views and comfort, each room is equipped with staggered diagonal cantilevers that extend towards the ocean. The architecture balances openness and privacy through large operable windows for cross ventilation and metal shutters that provide both sun control and seclusion.

Roofscape & Amenities

The hotel culminates at the rooftop level, where a central bridge connects two expansive terraces featuring a restaurant and infinity pool. From here, visitors can immerse themselves in panoramic perspectives of both the Atlantic Ocean and the vibrant city life below. This elevated social hub blurs the line between relaxation and urban vibrancy, making BA’RA Hotel a destination in itself.

Sustainable Tropical Design

The architectural strategy reflects a climate-responsive approach, embracing natural light, cross ventilation, and shading devices that minimize energy use. The combination of green landscapes, pergolas, and open-air circulation enhances the sense of eco-conscious luxury while embedding the project within João Pessoa’s cultural and natural identity.
