Revitalization of Congress Center Hamburg by Hupe Flatau Partner
Revitalized Congress Center Hamburg combines historic preservation and modern design, featuring glass façades, sustainable architecture, multifunctional halls, and vibrant urban connectivity.
Located in the heart of Hamburg, Germany, the Congress Center Hamburg (CCH) is an iconic venue with a rich history. Originally inaugurated in 1973, it was once Europe’s largest congress facility, attracting music legends such as ABBA, Deep Purple, and Queen, and hosting countless international conferences and events. After nearly five decades, the CCH underwent an extensive revitalization and expansion to meet modern standards while preserving its historical legacy.
The project, led by Hupe Flatau Partner in collaboration with Tim Hupe Architekten, was awarded to the ARGE agn leusmann / Tim Hupe Architekten team in 2014. The revitalization included careful architectural design, urban integration, and structural improvements, reopening to the public in 2022 with a full schedule of international events. The redevelopment strategically connects the CCH to the surrounding urban fabric, including Dag-Hammarskjöld-Platz, Marseiller Promenade, Planten un Blomen park, and nearby hotels, creating a vibrant public focal point in Hamburg.
The revitalization project focused on harmonizing old and new structures, linking historic event halls with modern additions. The new entrance hall, accessed via Congressplatz, seamlessly integrates with the atrium and elevated Belvedere, forming a continuous sequence that enhances visitor circulation and spatial experience. The hall’s prismatic form responds to the surrounding urban and architectural context, while extensive glass façades establish visual connections with the park and flood interiors with natural light, creating a welcoming and transparent environment.
A defining feature of the design is the façade’s horizontal ceiling panels, acting as a brise soleil to mediate views between the Belvedere and the park while providing shade and comfort for visitors. These architectural elements turn the building envelope into an interactive spatial layer that bridges indoor and outdoor areas. Inside, the interior spaces prioritize social interaction, flexible event use, and accessibility, making the CCH a dynamic hub for conferences, exhibitions, and cultural events.
The revitalization also incorporates sustainable design strategies, modern acoustic solutions, and state-of-the-art lighting to enhance visitor experience. Structural and landscape improvements were carefully planned by Wetzel & von Seht, WTM Engineers GmbH, and RMP Stephan Lenzen Landschaftsarchitekten, while Bartenbach GmbH and Müller-BBM GmbH Berlin provided lighting and acoustic expertise. The project balances heritage preservation with contemporary architectural innovation, establishing a landmark that respects its past while embracing the future.
The revitalized Congress Center Hamburg now stands as a premier conference and cultural destination, uniting historical significance, modern architectural design, and urban connectivity. Its reopening marked a new era for Hamburg, making the CCH a central meeting point for international visitors, professionals, and local communities alike.
