RizA ii House by React Architects: Modern Cycladic Living in Krotiri, Greece
RizA ii House by React Architects in Krotiri, Greece features ribbon-like white volumes, stone accents, multi-level courtyards, panoramic Parikia bay views.
Nestled on a dramatic sloping plot in Krotiri, Greece, the RizA ii House by React Architects (2022) showcases a masterful blend of contemporary design and Cycladic architectural heritage. Spanning 240 m², this residential complex combines two main houses with a cave-inspired guest house, thoughtfully positioned to maximize the southwest-facing views over the serene bay of Parikia.

Architecture Rooted in the Cyclades
The design draws inspiration from the arid Cycladic landscape, where white walls emerge seamlessly from the terrain. The structures unfold like a ribbon across the sloped site, creating a fluid connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. Each level and courtyard is meticulously oriented to enhance natural light, privacy, and panoramic vistas, while integrating multi-level terraces that emphasize a harmonious rhythm with the hillside topography.

Spatial Flow and Privacy
The RizA ii House masterfully balances openness and seclusion. Slight deviations in building surfaces allow for visual privacy between units without compromising the unity of the residential complex. Jagged building forms, coupled with multi-level exterior courtyards, create dynamic outdoor spaces that can be utilized year-round. In summer, the interiors expand into courtyards sheltered from northern winds, blending indoor living with the surrounding landscape.

Materiality and Design Expression
A striking feature of the project is the interplay between stone masonry and crisp white surfaces. The stone serves as a natural backdrop for the ribbon-like white volumes, forming retaining walls that bridge the steep slope and integrate underground spaces with the expansive external courtyards. Long narrow openings punctuate the checkered facade, producing a rhythmic visual pattern that enhances the architectural expression while maintaining a dialogue between interior and exterior.

Entrance and Landscape Integration
Visitors approach the residence via a central staircase at the plot’s highest point, flanked by a stone retaining wall reminiscent of traditional dry-stone techniques. From this vantage, one can enter the residence or continue along pathways leading to planted roofs and outdoor seating areas, offering uninterrupted views of the bay. Flexible spatial flows connect living areas with the roof and terraces, reinforcing the concept of a home that breathes with the environment.

Modern Interpretation of Cycladic Heritage
While rooted in the local vernacular, the RizA ii House redefines Cycladic architecture through a contemporary lens. The juxtaposition of white surfaces and natural stone emphasizes a sculptural quality, adding depth and plasticity to the volumes. Interior spaces feature seamless transitions, modern amenities, and natural materials that resonate with the surrounding landscape, creating a timeless residence that bridges tradition and modernity.
