What is housing?Housing is often defined as a dwelling, a residence for human beings but they are so much more than buildings for people to live in. It is a physical unit of mass as well as a social unit in a community. Public space, the open expanse of roadway that requires shared use among many, is often a plentiful resource in metropolitan areas. It accounts for 30-40 per cent of an urban footprint on average and often features street elements such as traffic lanes, sidewalks and gutters representing about a quarter of this proportion. In most cities within both developed and developing nations around the globe, public infrastructure typically represents the most substantial part of the hardscape when it comes to urban development. Housing usually accounts for almost 80 per cent of each city block’s combined area since building lots have grown slightly larger over time due to population growth. The structure and density of an area’s housing arrangements are thus important contributors to its quality of life and overall urban character (or lack thereof).Why is housing important?A home is referred to as "A place where you can find yourself". However, housing plays an important role in economic opportunity for individual workers and their families, affecting the current and future workers, employers, communities, and regional markets. The benefits of owning your own house are very concrete on a personal level i.e. it can help you keep your family together when you run into hard times etc. Research shows that housing unaffordability is associated with poorer physical health and is also associated with psychological health issues in the short-term. The stability of home life is a vital part of emotional development, so it’s understandable that unstable and dissatisfying homes can have far-reaching effects on mental wellbeing over time.But being able to provide affordable housing for people who will work hard is just as important because in the long term this tends to increase employment in whatever area they are located and by providing employees with affordable living options, companies actually benefit by having a larger applicant pool with which they could choose from which drives innovation and ultimately drives growth for everyone involved! What are some of the issues of housing?Housing crisisHomelessness on the rise so there is a need to create affordable, walkable, and climate-friendly neighborhoods.The spike in lodging costs is making it harder for a few to purchase there to begin with and for others to manage their lease, expanding requests for subsidized lodging and broadening the rich hole between leaseholders and mortgage holders. It is additionally constraining more families to live more distant from occupations, expanding commute times, undermining labor constraining cooperation and abating financial development.Whereas reasonableness concerns proceed to develop, moo contract rates, expanded investment funds, and a reinforcing work advertisement all contribute to making homeownership more available to a wide number of planned buyers.Residents want more affordable housing built in their cities. What are some types of housing?Subsidized housing or Public HousingHousing authorities are taking economy centric approaches for alleviating stress on housing. The government has subsidized housing in an effort to help people with limited financial resources get access to a decent place to live. Subsidized housing could be a government programme that includes both open and non-profit housing, as well as coordinated installments to qualified recipients. It includes many types of housing such as Co-operative (co-op) housing, Non-profit housing or Local Housing Corporations i.e. public housing. Several cathedrals throughout the Middle Ages, as well as the Acropolis in Athens, were built as a result of design competitions around 448 B.C. Many of the Church's efforts during the Renaissance were decided through design competitions in which all kinds of artists brought their varied talents to build up something grand in every sense of that word. In recent times an architectural competition form has taken on many forms. One form is a design challenge in which a company or the government planning to build a new structure invites architects to submit designs and plans.Design competitions offer many benefits, including raising community awareness and supporting design exploration. Independent panels of design professionals and stakeholders usually choose a winning design (such as local governments and residents). These competitions are most frequently used to award commissions for new public buildings, but some competitions seek designs for interior spaces (such as airports) or even temporary structures (such as visitor centers at national parks). The competition may be open to all architects or limited to those who belong to a particular organization. Though architectural competitions are held globally, many of them tend to be national or regional for public buildings that represent their countries. There is one particular competition, however, which has received significant attention from architects around the world - the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. This was a competition that attracted 250 entries from 14 countries (this number does not include the two submissions which were withdrawn) and eventually resulted in the construction of the White City. Many other important landmarks were constructed based on winning designs of competitions that have taken place over time; most prominent among these are Brasilia and Washington’s Capital Hill, built according to winning entries to international open competitions held on those sites.Architectural competitions are a great way to find creative design enthusiasts who not only have the relevant skills for designing and developing your project but who also share your vision regarding the problems affecting our society today. Types of the architecture competitions:• Competitions that are open to all (international, national, or regional) or competitions that are limited, selected, non-open.• Competitions for projects or for ideas: based on whether the intention is to build the project or to generate new ideas. Depending on the competition's scope and complexity, there may be a single-stage or two stages.• Anonymous or cooperative procedures: anonymity supports greater objectivity during the evaluation and award-granting deliberations. In cooperative procedures, the authors are invited to make in-person presentations to the jury in order to explain their design strategies and allow individual discussion.• Student or institute design competitions (held on university/state/country level for individual or group of students only) The relationship between architecture and culture is a phenomenon that has been studied for many decades. However, what's taking place now is much more revolutionary. No longer a current style of architecture that performs well for a while, the mindset now is to build in a way that's flexible so as to adapt to a culture's changing needs at any given time.
