Sustainable University Architecture: Innovating with Figured Ground Sports Arena
The article details the design and environmental integration of the Figured Ground Sports Arena at KLE Technological University, embodying sustainable architecture.
In the heart of Hubballi, India, a revolutionary project stands as a beacon of sustainable university architecture. The Figured Ground - University Sports Arena, designed by Thirdspace Architecture Studio, redefines the integration of architectural innovation with environmental consciousness. Completed in 2023 and sprawling over 4500 ft² within the KLE Technological University campus, this project showcases how buildings can embody dual identities and harmoniously blend with their surroundings.

The Dual Identity of the Sports Arena
The sports arena's unique site presents a duality; it faces a bustling intercity road while also opening up to the serene campus expanse. This juxtaposition guided the architects in creating a structure that could gracefully merge into its landscape from one angle and command attention from another. The design challenge was to create a building with no back, only fronts that interact with their surroundings in distinct ways.

Opposing Views Harmonized in Design
The design process was sparked by the differing perspectives within the university's leadership. Balancing these views, the architects envisioned the arena as both a respectful addition to the campus and a striking architectural statement for the city. By leveraging the natural gradient of the site, the building descends into the ground on the campus side while maintaining a significant presence on the city-facing side.

Integration with Environment: A Priority
The Figured Ground Sports Arena emphasizes its environmental integration. Sinking large volumes into the ground, the arena blends with the campus landscape, anchoring itself with central courts around which ancillary facilities revolve. This strategy, coupled with a pyramidal steel roof and a green roof enveloping the periphery, blurs the lines between built form and nature.

Architectural Language: Dialogue Between Built Form and Nature
The arena's architectural language speaks to this dialogue, offering access through plazas and pathways that extend the campus's social fabric. Its design caters to programmatic needs while ensuring seamless integration with the environment, serving as a model for sustainable university architecture.

The Arena as a Communal Space
Beyond its functional role, the arena transcends to become a communal space, inviting interaction and engagement. Its design weaves together plazas, pathways, and gardens, encouraging community involvement. The building's zinc cladding and glass facade, along with its inviting interior, command attention while fostering a welcoming atmosphere.

A Symbol of Hyper-Urbanity in Harmony
As the sun plays upon its zinc skin, the sports arena reveals its complexity—asserting its presence on the cityscape while integrating into the campus. This project stands as a testament to sustainable university architecture, demonstrating how a facility can emerge as a symbol of urbanity in harmony with its surroundings.

Pioneering Sustainable University Architecture
The Figured Ground - University Sports Arena at KLE Technological University epitomizes the principles of sustainable university architecture. Through innovative design that embraces environmental integration and community engagement, this project sets a new standard for educational facilities worldwide. It serves as a shining example of how architecture can contribute to a sustainable future while meeting the needs of its users and the broader community.
