In 2023, REAL Architects undertook a significant renovation of Ningbo Damin School, a distinguished institution in China dedicated to children with special educational needs. This project exemplifies how thoughtful design can rejuvenate educational spaces, enhancing both functionality and inclusivity.

The Loving Garden: A Sensory Oasis

Central to the renovation is the Loving Garden, a sensory-rich environment designed to engage students' senses and foster interaction with nature. Incorporating elements like balsam camphor stepping stumps and diverse plant textures, the garden provides a tranquil space for reflection and socialization. The cloverleaf pattern in the pavement symbolizes a serene and joyful life, aligning with the school's ethos.

Creating a Compensatory Environment

Understanding the unique needs of its students, the design incorporates compensatory elements to stimulate sensory experiences. Tactile walls with varied textures, sound-interactive installations, and aromatic plants like ginkgo and lavender contribute to a therapeutic environment that supports sensory development.

Inclusive Design Philosophy

The renovation prioritizes accessibility and safety, considering the behavioral and physiological characteristics of children with special needs. The landscape design encourages exploration and independence, balancing spaces for group activities with secluded areas for personal reflection.

The Damin School Renovation by REAL Architects stands as a testament to the impact of thoughtful design in special education settings. By integrating sensory gardens, physical activity zones, and multifunctional spaces, the project creates an inclusive and stimulating environment that caters to the diverse needs of its students.
