Casa Ajau by Nutum Estudio: A Modern Homage to Mayan Architecture in Mérida, Mexico
Casa Ajau by Nutum Estudio transforms a narrow Mérida plot into a Mayan-inspired, cross-ventilated home blending tradition, modernity, and nature.
Nestled in the heart of Mérida, Mexico, Casa Ajau by Nutum Estudio is a striking example of contemporary residential architecture that thoughtfully bridges modern living with the rich cultural heritage of the Mayan peninsula. Completed in 2023, this 170 m² residence reflects a poetic dialogue between architecture, history, and the natural environment, while prioritizing spatial functionality, natural ventilation, and social interaction. Photographed by Manolo R Solis, the project showcases the firm’s commitment to contextual sensitivity and material authenticity.

Embracing Context: From Garage to Human Habitat
Originally a concrete plot serving as a garage, Casa Ajau transforms its utilitarian foundations into a vibrant, human-centered space. Graffiti on a metal party wall welcomes visitors with the phrase ki'imak k óol taale'ex waye (“I’m glad you’re here”), signaling the house’s intention to reconnect occupants with the site. By elevating the concrete slab previously dedicated to vehicles, Nutum Estudio created a habitat for humans, vegetation, and local fauna, turning an urban void into a lively, inhabitable landscape.

Integrating Mayan Cultural Language
Built between narrow party walls on the edge of Mérida’s city center, Casa Ajau negotiates its relationship with neighboring structures while reflecting the poetic language of the MAYAB. The architects drew inspiration from the formal languages of the Mayan peninsula, integrating traditional elements like chukum plaster finishes and Tzalam wood carpentry, which honor the region’s artisanal heritage. A reinterpretation of the grand arch from the Governor’s Palace in Uxmal serves both a symbolic and functional purpose, reviving historical forms while asserting a contemporary political narrative that celebrates pre-colonial identity.

Architectural Organization and Spatial Flow
Due to the narrow, elongated plot, the home is composed of three distinct volumes separated by four open patios. This arrangement ensures cross-ventilation and a sense of continuous expansion, creating an architectural experience that feels boundless. The first volume houses the kitchen and dining area, opening onto a patio with a pool, encouraging fluid indoor-outdoor interaction. The second volume, contained under the monumental arch, functions as the main living area or saloon, offering flexibility for social gatherings and entertainment.

Social Spaces and Contemporary Living
Casa Ajau emphasizes communal living through versatile spaces designed for both conversation and recreation. The living area is equipped with a projector, transforming it into a cinematic environment for family or friends, reflecting modern lifestyle needs while celebrating social interaction. The design embraces the way people engage with audiovisual media today, encouraging shared experiences without diminishing the authenticity of domestic life.

Private Retreats and Harmonious Vegetation
The bedrooms, located at the rear of the plot and on the upper floor, prioritize privacy and tranquility. Each room opens onto patios adorned with the yellow blossoms of jabin trees, turning vegetation into a functional architectural element. These landscaped areas not only provide visual privacy but also offer passive shading, mitigating the intense tropical sun and enhancing comfort throughout the home.

Materiality and Sustainability
Casa Ajau demonstrates thoughtful material selection with locally sourced chukum plaster and Tzalam wood, ensuring durability and cultural resonance. The integration of natural elements like plants and trees not only enhances aesthetics but also contributes to environmental sustainability by improving microclimates and reducing energy demands through passive cooling strategies.
Casa Ajau by Nutum Estudio is a masterful blend of Mayan-inspired architecture, modern design, and environmentally responsive planning. Its careful balance of cultural symbolism, natural ventilation, and social functionality makes it a standout project in Mérida’s urban landscape, celebrating history while meeting contemporary residential needs.
