A Dreamlike Reimagining of Japanese Dining Culture

The newly renovated Matsuri Restaurant on Rue Victor Hugo in Paris marks a bold rebranding of an iconic Japanese dining experience. Designed by Rudy Guénaire, this 200 m² space blends cultural nostalgia, speculative futurism, and tactile design, resulting in a futuristic Japanese restaurant interior design that captivates both the eye and the appetite.

From Tradition to Transformation

Matsuri has long been synonymous with sit-down Japanese dining, especially known for its kaiten-style service where plates glide by diners on a conveyor belt. In its latest transformation, Guénaire reinterprets the spirit of Japan's Izakayas while injecting it with California's mid-century fascination with Japanese minimalism and modernism. The result is a design that feels both rooted and visionary, historic and speculative.

Kaiten Dining Meets California Modernism

The spatial organization revolves around the Kaiten belt—a dynamic axis around which diners are seated. The belt’s supporting furniture takes its inspiration from California's modernist forms, softened with curved edges and angular geometries that echo a retro-futuristic aesthetic. Custom-designed chairs pay homage to well-worn Izakaya seating, refined here with a sturdier silhouette and subtle sensuality.

Immersive Lighting and Atmosphere

Guénaire transforms the restaurant into an immersive environment that shifts dramatically from day to night. In the evening, lighting dims to an almost twilight hue. Overhead, a series of rectangular domes made of ultra-thick polycarbonate stretch across the ceiling. These sculptural elements reference the neon-lit visions of Blade Runner, casting a perpetual sunset glow onto rough concrete walls adorned with vintage Japanese posters. The layered lighting evokes cinematic stillness, transporting diners into a speculative version of Tokyo’s past imagined through a European lens.

A Hybrid of Cultures, Times, and Materials

The design successfully fuses temporal and cultural layers. It captures the essence of Japan’s vibrant food culture, the playful utilitarianism of its seating, and the ambiance of its urban eateries. Simultaneously, it channels a nostalgic Western projection of futurism—an imagined future filtered through the past. Concrete, polycarbonate, wood, and archival graphic materials combine to create a textured interior that is both raw and refined.
