House in Galamares By atelier RUA – Modern Residential Architecture in Sintra, Portugal
House in Galamares by atelier RUA in Sintra features modern design, central courtyard, terraces, natural light, timber interiors, and panoramic Serra de Sintra views.
Located just 30 minutes from Lisbon, the House in Galamares by atelier RUA is a striking single-family residence set within the scenic backdrop of the Serra de Sintra. Completed in 2025, this 420 m² home spans two above-ground floors and a basement, designed to merge modern living with the surrounding natural landscape. Photographed by Francisco Nogueira, the residence reflects a careful balance between openness, privacy, and connectivity with the environment.

The architectural concept is based on a square volume with its northern corner subtracted, a diagonal defined by the lot boundary. This design forms a central courtyard, which acts as the heart of the home, around which all social and collective spaces—living room, dining room, and kitchen—are arranged. The courtyard not only organizes circulation but also brings natural light deep into the interior, creating a fluid interaction between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Access is through the southern corner near the parking area, leading directly to the courtyard. From here, movement flows naturally around the home, with vertical connections highlighted through the main staircase and structural beams, which also define spatial transitions. On the ground floor, openings in the northern corner connect the home to the exterior garden while maintaining intimacy in private spaces.

The first floor adopts an "L"-shaped layout for the four bedrooms, oriented east and west, with corner bedrooms extending to terraces. These terraces capture sunlight throughout the day and offer panoramic views of the Serra de Sintra, including the Pena Palace and Monserrate Palace. Outdoor living is enhanced with benches, flowerbeds, a tubular metal pergola, climbing plants, and wooden shutters that provide shade while maintaining privacy.

The basement mirrors the upper-floor layout with an "L" shape, connecting to two courtyards at the eastern and western ends. These spaces ensure ample natural light, ventilation, and a strong visual connection to the outdoors. Interior spaces are enriched with timber beams and wood finishes, offering warmth and texture that harmonize with the structural rhythm and minimalist aesthetic.

Through the House in Galamares, atelier RUA demonstrates how modern architecture can create intimate, functional, and visually engaging residences that embrace natural light, views, and outdoor connectivity. The project exemplifies thoughtful design in residential architecture, where every element—from the courtyard to terraces, beams, and pergolas—is carefully considered to foster mindful, elevated living.
