Embracing Nature Through Architecture
The House in the Forest, designed by MALVINA ZAYAT estudio de arquitectura, is a model of sustainable living immersed within the Sierras Chicas landscape in Argentina. Built on a 12-hectare plot surrounded by dense woodland, the project responds to the challenge of building an off-grid forest house with deep respect for the natural environment. It seamlessly blends landscape, architecture, and ecological performance to offer a retreat rooted in resilience, self-sufficiency, and minimal environmental disturbance.





Preserving the Forest and Building with Purpose
The location was intentionally selected to minimize the impact on the existing ecosystem. Trees were preserved, and the architectural layout was carefully adapted to work around them. One of the defining constraints—and opportunities—was the absence of a water supply network, alongside the fact that the clients, including an artisan blacksmith, were the builders of their own home. These factors shaped the design, materials, and construction methods, resulting in a handcrafted, locally resonant dwelling.




Programmatic Volumes Designed for Function and Flow
The house is organized into two distinct volumes that hover gently above the forest floor. One volume accommodates the social spaces: the kitchen, dining area, living room, and a garage for bicycles and motorcycles. The second contains private zones: the main bedroom, guest room, bathroom, and laundry. These two masses are connected by a third volume—an entrance atrium—that bridges the space, functioning as both a connector and a threshold.




Theatrical Entry and Sensory Transitions
Entry into the home is dramatized through a rising walkway that winds between the trees, arriving at a blind façade that conceals the view beyond. Opening the door becomes an architectural reveal—the landscape floods in, and the home’s materials withdraw in quiet support of the surrounding nature. This element of surprise sets the emotional tone of the house: architecture is present, but the forest is the protagonist.



Inside, timber-clad walls, low ceilings, and minimalist detailing heighten the connection to the outdoors. Glazed walls on the north and northeast sides dissolve the barrier between interior and exterior, inviting filtered light, forest views, and ambient sounds into daily life.



Lightweight Structure and Camouflaged Form
The home is structurally elevated through a system of four steel frames per volume, resting on concrete columns that disappear into the undergrowth. These frames, painted in earthy tones, echo the vertical rhythm of tree trunks and support the gutters and water collection trays above. By lifting the building off the ground, the design allows native vegetation to persist underneath and enhances ventilation and durability.




Energy Efficiency and Off-Grid Systems
With no access to public utilities, the house employs comprehensive off-grid systems. Thermal insulation is maximized through polyurethane-insulated panels in the ceiling and walls. Double-glazed PVC windows with thermal bridge breaks ensure high performance in extreme temperatures.



Heating is provided through a heat pump system that powers both fan coils and underfloor heating. Rainwater is harvested through suspended gutter trays and channeled into vertical metal drains, then stored and reused for domestic purposes. Wastewater is processed through phytoremediation for black water and sedimentation treatment for gray water, both used for irrigation of the surrounding land.



Architecture in Harmony with Landscape
The House in the Forest is more than just a residence—it is a manifestation of living lightly on the land. Every decision, from layout to structural system, from thermal design to water reuse, expresses a commitment to environmental stewardship. It is not just off-grid; it is deeply integrated with the rhythms and textures of its forested setting.




This is a home that does not impose itself on the land but collaborates with it, offering a model for future off-grid forest houses that prioritize coexistence, self-sufficiency, and architectural grace.
