What if a city's most visible landmark was also its most productive farm? The London Vertical Sphere Farm takes a familiar provocation, that cities should grow their own food, and packages it inside a structure so formally aggressive it forces the question into public consciousness. Rather than tucking agriculture into basement hydroponics labs or rooftop greenhouses, the project scales vertical farming to the level of urban spectacle: a spherical core wrapped in planting discs, topped with research and living pods, and planted on a commercial podium open to the street.
Designed by Hashem Taher, the project responds to a stark demographic forecast. By 2050, nearly 80% of the world's population will live in urban areas, demanding roughly 20% more land for food production at the very moment green space degradation and suburban sprawl are pushing farmland further from city centers. The London Vertical Sphere Farm confronts that gap head-on, proposing a single architectural entity that combines food production, public education, renewable energy systems, and residential quarters in the heart of London.
Greyland Meets Greenland: The Conceptual Framework

The diagram above maps the core tension the project sets out to resolve: the widening separation between grey urban centers and the green agricultural land that feeds them. Taher's concept reframes this as a design problem rather than a logistics problem. Instead of optimizing supply chains to move food into cities faster, the proposal merges the two zones into a single vertical structure. Green infrastructure acts as a natural air filter, improving urban air quality while simultaneously producing food. The illustrated sections break down how farming, public space, and circulation interlock within the tower's profile, making the argument that density itself can be a form of ecological restoration.
Four Stacked Programs Inside a Steel-and-Arch Core

The sectional diagram reveals a four-level programmatic stack held together by an arch and steel core structure. At the base sits the podium shell, a publicly accessible zone designed for markets and shops that anchor the tower in the rhythms of urban commerce. The mid-section houses the spherical farm itself, where stacked planting discs achieve a food yield density claimed to be 100 times greater than traditional horizontal farming. Ramps rather than elevators serve as the primary vertical circulation, allowing both people and, notably, cattle to move between floors. This is a deliberate choice: ramps reduce energy consumption while reinforcing the physical connection between inhabitants and the act of food production.
At the top of the tower, living and research pods house scientists and residents whose daily routines are interwoven with the farm below. The arrangement is pragmatic. Continuous occupation means continuous observation, testing, and iteration on growing methods. A hydroponic irrigation system manages water delivery to vertical crops, while a biogas cycle converts organic waste back into energy, closing the loop. Solar panels across the façade and a rainwater harvesting system round out the renewable infrastructure, positioning the tower as a near-autonomous food and energy producer.

The form is deliberately monumental. Taher wants the structure to function as an iconic architectural landmark, one that doubles as a public attraction and advertises the importance of sustainable food systems simply by being impossible to ignore. The plaza at the base invites foot traffic and positions the market-level podium as a threshold between conventional city life and the vertical farm above.
After Dark: The Tower as Skyline Signal

At twilight, the tower becomes a luminous beacon against the London skyline. The rendering emphasizes how the glass sphere and illuminated planting floors transform the structure from a daytime curiosity into a nighttime landmark. Palm trees and hot air balloons in the foreground push the image toward the speculative, but the underlying point holds: a building this visually assertive can shift public perception of what urban agriculture looks like. It is not a shed on a rooftop. It is a centerpiece.
