The Malvas 59 Residence Estudio Radillo Alba is a striking residential renovation project that seamlessly merges modern design with sustainable building practices. Located on the outskirts of the city, the 350 m² residence sits on a 1,400 m² corner lot surrounded by casuarinas and jacarandas. Designed by Estudio Radillo Alba, the project focuses on reconfiguring two existing homes—one from the 1970s and another from the early 2000s—into a harmonious living environment enhanced by terraces, gardens, and advanced eco-technologies.



Architectural Concept and Design Approach
The architectural intervention emphasizes the creation of fluid indoor-outdoor spaces. Gardens and terraces form an integral part of the design, ensuring privacy while offering scenic views of the lush surroundings. The two volumes are interconnected through open courtyards, parking areas, and terraces that extend the functionality of interior spaces such as dining rooms, bathrooms, and bedrooms.

The design approach respects the original structural elements, combining load-bearing walls with a lightweight two-pitched roof system. This architectural strategy not only preserves the character of the existing structures but also introduces new sustainable solutions to modernize the homes.


Sustainable and Passive Design Strategies
Sustainability is at the core of Malvas 59 Residence Estudio Radillo Alba. The project incorporates passive and active eco-technologies, including solar panels, LED lighting, rainwater harvesting systems, and natural cross ventilation to minimize energy consumption. The two-pitched roof is designed to direct rainwater towards the subsoil, with a collection cistern ensuring efficient water management.


Small canopies attached to the façades help control solar gain, while decorative rain chains serve both functional and aesthetic purposes by guiding water from the roof into the drainage system.


Material Palette and Regional Influence
The material selection pays tribute to the natural resources of the region. The walls are constructed on a base of volcanic stone, abundant in the area, while exposed concrete beams and wooden elements add warmth and texture to the architectural composition. These materials create a visual dialogue between the built environment and the natural landscape.



The terraces and outdoor extensions emphasize connectivity with the surrounding gardens, enhancing the home's ability to blend seamlessly with nature.



Landscape and Outdoor Spaces
The gardens surrounding Malvas 59 Residence are carefully planned to integrate existing trees while preserving privacy for both homes. By controlling the height and density of the landscaping, the architects achieved a balance between openness and seclusion.
