Modernist Tropical Residence & Atelier in Thiruvankulam, India - Cochin Creative Collective's Architectural Marvel
Explore Cochin Creative Collective's modernist masterpiece in Kerala – a tropical artist's residence and atelier.
Discover the essence of modernism seamlessly blended with the tropical charm of Kerala in the artist's residence and atelier meticulously crafted by Cochin Creative Collective. This architectural gem, curated by Hana Abdel, unfolds a captivating narrative through its additive forms and juxtaposing geometries, harmonizing with the auspicious east-west direction.
Exploring Modernism in Kerala's Tropics
Embark on a visual journey through the 3864 ft² residence, where Lijo John Mathew and Madhushitha CA, the lead architects, ingeniously shape a cluster of forms. The square plan of the main house, a humble nod to the 9-grid, exudes functionality on the ground level and houses the artist's atelier on the first floor. The deliberate tension created by auxiliary components like the car porch and staircase adds a unique dimension to the architectural composition.

Harmony in Design and Nature
A key feature of this artistic abode is its seamless integration with nature. The residence unfolds to an expansive north-facing garden, while the south-facing bedrooms exhibit a deliberate lack of hierarchy in size or position. The intentional use of neutral and warm materials, such as polished natural stone, exposed concrete, white plastered walls, and colorful square tiles, enhances the connection between the architectural design and the lush surroundings.

A Journey to Creativity
Delve into the artist's daily ritual of traversing a carefully designed circulation system, emphasizing a strict separation between workspace and home. The deliberate journey adds a haptic element, heightening the anticipation as one approaches the sunlit studio/atelier with its double-height space and strategically positioned north-facing openings, flooding the space with natural light.

Architectural Finesse in Detai
Unravel the architectural finesse encapsulated in the bare cuboid form of the house – a remnant of a truncated cube with symmetrically articulated openings. The exterior's intentional grid brick patterns not only add aesthetic appeal but also serve as a protective layer against Kerala's tropical climate. The red cladding and exposed cement finish on the exterior bricks contribute to the visual allure.

Material Palette and Rooftop Serenity
Explore the carefully curated material palette featuring polished natural stone flooring, exposed concrete ceilings, and vibrant square tiles for the interiors. The red cladding and exposed cement finish on the exterior bricks not only provide a protective layer but also contribute to the visual appeal. Ascend to the rooftop terrace at the southern end, offering panoramic views of nearby fields, with a distinctive tower acting as a marker and gateway to the residential neighborhood.

In conclusion, Cochin Creative Collective's artist's residence and atelier stand as a testament to the fusion of modernist architecture with Kerala's tropical context. This meticulously designed masterpiece not only caters to the functional needs of its inhabitants but also creates an immersive experience that transcends the boundaries between art and living. Witness the architectural prowess unfold in every corner of this tropical haven, where form, function, and creativity converge in perfect harmony.
