River Sea Villa: Modern Japanese Villa Architecture
River Sea Villa in Japan exemplifies modern Japanese villa architecture, harmonizing vernacular materials, curved layouts, and immersive natural experiences.
River Sea Villa, designed by KAWAZOE JUNICHIRO ARCHITECTS, exemplifies modern Japanese villa architecture, blending contemporary design with local vernacular traditions. Located near the mouth of a river in Sumoto, Japan, the villa spans 427 m² and integrates harmoniously into its natural and built surroundings.

Site Context and Design Concept
The site extends from north to south, with neighboring buildings to the east and west. To maximize privacy and create a harmonious flow, the architects aligned the villa along a curving north-south axis called the "Path," directing views and movement toward the river. This approach allows guests to experience a gradual transition from entrance to main building while enjoying two courtyards and guest spaces along the way.

Spatial Organization
The villa consists of three primary structures: the entrance building, guest building, and main building. The one-story configuration minimizes the environmental impact, while the courtyards between the structures enhance spatial separation and privacy. The curved Path connects these buildings, fostering a fluid experience where the boundaries between inside and outside continuously blur.

Architectural Materials and Aesthetic
The exterior features horizontally extended flat roofs, local plaster walls, and border tiles made from Awaji roof tiles. The irregular baking of the tiles creates subtle color variations and textures, emphasizing the villa’s artisanal quality. The fusion of modern forms with local materials exemplifies the architects’ goal of combining vernacular and contemporary design.

Interior Design and Experience
Inside, natural materials such as wood dominate, creating warmth and visual continuity. Large openings and strategic circulation connect interior spaces to courtyards and the surrounding river landscape. The design encourages movement, exploration, and a changing perception of space as one follows the curved Path. This seamless integration of inside and outside enhances the villa’s immersive experience.

River Sea Villa is a refined example of modern Japanese villa architecture, balancing privacy, materiality, and landscape integration. The project demonstrates how contemporary design can harmonize with local traditions while providing a unique resort-like experience.
