Tan90° Bar by AD ARCHITECTURE: A Radical Interior Design Experience in Shenzhen
Radical Shenzhen bar design blending surreal spatial forms, immersive storytelling, and flexible day-to-night functionality, redefining contemporary experiential hospitality interiors.
Located within the vibrant OCT-Loft Creative Culture Park in Shenzhen, Tan90° Bar by AD ARCHITECTURE redefines contemporary bar interior design through experimentation, storytelling, and spatial fluidity. Surrounded by repurposed industrial buildings, lush greenery, and a thriving creative community, the project responds to its cultural context with a bold, unconventional design language that seeks to captivate visitors and elevate commercial engagement.

Concept: Breaking Norms Through Radical Design
In a city known for innovation and rapid transformation, AD ARCHITECTURE approached Tan90° Bar as an opportunity to challenge conventional hospitality design. Rather than following predictable aesthetics, the designers embraced a “radical” methodology—pushing spatial boundaries while maintaining a strategic understanding of business operations and consumer behavior.
This approach results in a highly immersive environment that not only attracts attention but also enhances brand identity, making the bar a distinctive destination within Shenzhen’s competitive nightlife scene.

Spatial Exploration and Experiential Design
The 200 m² interior is conceived as a dynamic, ever-evolving environment. The design blurs the line between reality and imagination, creating a layered spatial experience that encourages exploration. By introducing unexpected forms and nonlinear layouts, the architects generate a sense of discovery—where every corner reveals a new perspective.
This exploration reflects a broader design philosophy: embracing uncertainty and serendipity as tools for innovation. The result is a space that feels alive, constantly shifting in perception depending on movement, light, and user interaction.

Purity vs. Complexity: A Surreal Spatial Language
One of the defining features of Tan90° Bar is the interplay between purity and complexity. AD ARCHITECTURE amplifies simple geometric forms into intricate spatial compositions, producing a surreal yet cohesive atmosphere.
Despite its visual complexity, the design maintains a sense of clarity through controlled materiality and form. This balance creates a striking environment where minimal elements evolve into immersive architectural expressions, offering a unique sensory experience.

Storytelling Through Psychedelic Imagery
The bar’s interior is not just a physical space—it is a narrative environment shaped by “psychedelic imagery.” Inspired by fragmented, transient visuals, the design encourages users to construct their own interpretations of the space.
Rather than presenting a fixed story, the architecture acts as a canvas for imagination. Elements appear and dissolve, creating a sequence of moments that feel both abstract and emotionally engaging. This participatory approach transforms visitors from passive observers into active contributors to the spatial experience.

Flexible Functionality: From Day Café to Night Bar
Tan90° Bar is designed to adapt seamlessly to different times of day and user needs. During daylight hours, it operates as a relaxed café environment, while at night it transforms into a vibrant whiskey bar.
The fluid spatial layout supports this dual functionality, allowing the atmosphere to shift without physical alterations. The interior can evoke multiple interpretations—a cave, a space capsule, or even a neural network—enhancing its versatility and imaginative appeal.

Strategic Design and Commercial Value
Beyond its artistic ambition, the project reflects a deep understanding of market trends and consumer expectations. AD ARCHITECTURE leveraged its expertise to create a branded environment tailored to high-end clientele, ensuring both aesthetic impact and commercial success.
The “twisted” spatial logic serves as a bridge between creativity and business strategy, reinforcing the idea that innovative design can drive engagement and generate new value in the hospitality industry.
