What if a residential tower grew food on every floor, raised livestock at ground level, and farmed fish in its subterranean levels? The Green Hive takes that premise literally, proposing a cluster of high-rise buildings where vegetable farms, aquatic facilities, and animal pastures are stacked vertically alongside apartments. It is less a building and more a closed-loop agricultural system wrapped in a honeycomb-inspired modular structure, designed to make a city block self-sufficient in food production while housing a full residential community.

Designed by Aishwarya Dwivedi, The Green Hive addresses food security and urban resilience by eliminating the distance between where food is grown and where it is consumed. The project proposes three residential towers that sit above subterranean aquaculture facilities and beside open-air pastures, all connected by an entry plaza, community restaurants serving farm-to-table food, and public green spaces for leisure and cultural events. The ambition is total: cut transportation emissions, foster urban biodiversity, and rebuild the relationship between city dwellers and the natural processes that sustain them.

Three Towers Over Subterranean Farms

The site section drawing reveals the project's most striking organizational move: three residential towers rise above a shared subterranean layer dedicated to aquatic farms and support infrastructure. From this aerial view, the scale of the operation becomes clear. The towers are not simply residential slabs with a garden tacked on; they are vertical ecosystems where every floor has a programmatic purpose tied to food production or communal living. Below grade, aquaculture facilities diversify the food sources available within the complex, turning what would typically be parking or mechanical space into productive aquatic zones.

The vertical layout saves land by compressing functions that would normally sprawl across hectares of countryside into a single urban footprint. By localizing food production, the design directly targets the carbon emissions associated with transporting produce into cities, while also making the community less vulnerable to global supply chain disruptions.

Tiered Farming Floors and Aqua Farm Levels

The section and isometric drawing breaks the tower apart to show how its internal floors are organized. Tiered vegetable farm layers alternate with residential floors and outdoor terraces, ensuring year-round food production at the building's core. Dedicated aqua farm floors appear lower in the stack, integrated into the structure rather than appended to it. The outdoor terraces are not decorative balconies; they serve as extensions of the growing zones, providing sunlight and airflow to crops that need them.

What makes this stacking strategy compelling is its logic of proximity. Residents live steps away from the food they eat, and community restaurants within the complex can serve produce harvested the same day. The honeycomb-inspired modular geometry visible in the isometric view suggests a structural system designed for repetition and adaptability, where new farming modules could theoretically be added as demand grows.

Cattle Grazing Between Planted Towers

Perhaps the project's most provocative image shows cattle grazing on an open pasture at ground level, framed by the planted terraces of the residential towers behind them. Animal husbandry is not an afterthought here; it is a dedicated programme zone where livestock coexist with greenery to create what the designer describes as a closed-loop agricultural system. Animal waste feeds vegetable production, vegetable waste feeds animals, and the cycle repeats. The rendering makes the pastoral scene feel almost surreal against the backdrop of multi-story towers, but that dissonance is precisely the point.

By placing pastures, fish farms, vegetable terraces, and apartments within the same site boundary, The Green Hive argues that urban biodiversity is not achieved through decorative planting alone. It requires the presence of actual agricultural processes, including animals, within the city. The public green spaces visible at grade level serve double duty as leisure areas and as productive landscape, blurring the line between park and farm.

Why This Project Matters

The Green Hive is unapologetically ambitious. It does not settle for green roofs or token community gardens; it proposes an entire food production chain embedded within residential architecture. Vegetable farms, aquaculture, and animal husbandry are treated as core building programmes on par with apartments and restaurants. That ambition raises real questions about structural loads, zoning, sanitation, and operational logistics, but it also forces a conversation about what urban buildings could actually do if we stopped treating them as passive containers for human occupation.

Aishwarya Dwivedi's project is a provocation aimed at the gap between what cities consume and what they produce. In a world where food travels thousands of kilometers before reaching a plate, a building that grows vegetables on its terraces, raises fish below grade, and grazes cattle at its base is a radical proposition. Whether or not every element proves buildable at this scale, The Green Hive reframes urban resilience as something that begins not with infrastructure policy but with the architecture of a single city block.
