Transforming Community Spaces: Multipurpose Space by OBO Estudi in Sant Esteve de Palautordera
An in-depth look at OBO Estudi's innovative and sustainable multipurpose space transforming community interaction in Sant Esteve de Palautordera.
In 2023, OBO Estudi embarked on a transformative project in the town of Sant Esteve de Palautordera, Spain. The new multipurpose space was created to meet the diverse needs of the local community, replacing an old football pitch with a modern, multifunctional covered area. This article delves into the architectural ingenuity and community-centric design that make this project stand out.

The Site and Initial Challenges
The site, situated at the town's edge, consisted of three terraces or platforms: a road at the top, a children's playground in the middle, and the football pitch at the bottom. These were separated by an inaccessible slope, creating an urban "cul de sac." The challenge was to connect these distinct topographical elements visually and functionally while adhering to a tight budget.

Connecting the Terraces
OBO Estudi's solution involved modifying the terrain to create a cohesive space. The new design included a sloped roof that opens towards the playground, inviting interaction between the platforms. The football pitch was reconfigured to balance the land, forming stands and a staircase that seamlessly connect the three levels.

Structural Innovation
A significant aspect of the project was the innovative use of a metallic structure with industrialized profiles to enhance structural inertia. The pillars house a truss that adapts to the site's modified topography, supporting wooden joists and a simple metal truss that spans the entire area. This lightweight, white-painted system minimizes its visual impact, allowing the natural beauty of the adjacent Montseny natural park to take center stage.

Sustainability Features
The project incorporated several sustainable elements. The roof is designed to collect rainwater, channeling it into a continuous drainage system where creepers are intended to grow, providing protection from the eastern sun. Excess water is directed to the nearby Tordera River, integrating the building into its natural environment.

Community Impact
The multipurpose space serves as a hub for various recreational and training activities, fostering community engagement. By optimizing resources and employing a minimalist design approach, OBO Estudi created a space that not only meets economic constraints but also enriches the social fabric of Sant Esteve de Palautordera.
OBO Estudi's multipurpose space in Sant Esteve de Palautordera exemplifies how thoughtful architectural design can transform underutilized areas into vibrant community hubs. By addressing topographical challenges and integrating sustainable features, the project demonstrates a harmonious blend of functionality, aesthetics, and environmental stewardship.
