Treehouse Apartment: A Warm Timber Interior Blending Craft, Play, and Contemporary Living

Located in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Treehouse Apartment by Projekt V Arhitektura is a carefully crafted interior transformation that reimagines a historic courtyard apartment into a tactile, nature-inspired living environment. Designed for a young family, the project merges contemporary minimalism with local craftsmanship, creating a home that is both playful and deeply rooted in material authenticity. 

Set within an Austro-Hungarian-era residential block, the apartment carries a historical character that informs the design approach. Rather than erasing this legacy, the renovation builds upon it, drawing from Sarajevo’s modernist traditions while introducing a new layer of warmth and intimacy through natural materials. The result is a space that feels timeless—balancing past influences with contemporary living.

Central to the design is the concept of “groundedness,” expressed through a continuous cherry wood element that wraps around the apartment. This horizontal datum line rises from the floor and extends across walls, doors, and built-in furniture, creating a unified spatial language. Like a horizon or forest edge, this wooden ribbon establishes a sense of continuity and calm, connecting different rooms while subtly defining their functions.

The apartment is organized as a sequence of spaces that unfold through carefully framed thresholds. The hallway acts as a transitional zone, lined with clay-painted surfaces and flush cherry cabinetry that extends above door heights. Each doorway becomes a portal, leading into rooms with distinct atmospheres yet unified by a shared material palette. This layering of spaces creates a rhythm of movement, where transitions are as meaningful as destinations.

Materiality is at the heart of the project. A palette of cherry wood, clay-painted walls, stone surfaces, travertine, and linen textiles creates a warm and tactile environment. These materials are chosen not only for their aesthetic qualities but also for their sustainability and connection to local traditions. The use of natural finishes enhances the sensory experience of the home, making it both visually and physically engaging.

The living and kitchen areas are combined into a single open space, filled with natural light from the east. Floor-to-ceiling linen curtains provide flexibility, allowing the space to shift between openness and intimacy. The cherry wood element rises here to form sculptural columns that define the dining area, integrating structure and furniture into a cohesive whole.

One of the most distinctive features of the apartment is the bespoke children’s treehouse—a playful yet refined insertion that transforms the interior into an imaginative landscape. Constructed from prefabricated spruce glulam, the treehouse is designed as a miniature architectural world. It includes multiple levels, a loft, built-in stairs, and carefully crafted openings that filter light and views. Positioned to overlook the courtyard, it evokes the sensation of being elevated among trees, offering a space for exploration, creativity, and retreat.

This element is more than a playful addition; it reflects the project’s broader philosophy of integrating architecture with everyday life. By creating a dedicated space for children that is both functional and inspiring, the design acknowledges the importance of imagination and interaction within the home.

Craftsmanship plays a significant role throughout the apartment. Furniture and fittings are sourced from local Bosnian makers, including handcrafted pieces by renowned artisans. These elements reinforce the connection to regional culture while supporting contemporary design practices. Artworks by local artists are also integrated into the space, adding layers of meaning and identity.

Sustainability is embedded in both material choice and construction. The use of natural, locally sourced materials, combined with efficient design strategies, ensures a low environmental impact while enhancing indoor comfort. The project demonstrates how thoughtful design can align ecological responsibility with aesthetic and functional quality.

Ultimately, the Treehouse Apartment is an exploration of how interiors can shape experience. Through its use of natural materials, spatial continuity, and imaginative elements, the project creates a home that is both grounded and uplifting.
