Temporary Playground For A Permanent Place
“Temporary Playground For A Permanent Place” is a proposal for sensory play for children to freely explore their environment and foster resilience and confidence. The design responds to the site’s natural climate and physicality. It seeks to provide a feeling of safety in an otherwise challenging and unstable environment.

Cover Page
This proposal blurs the distinction between play and education and creatively combines the two to provide a space which can empower and provide a feeling of safety in an otherwise challenging and unstable environment.
Plan + Material References
We looked to details in and around the site, to inform the materiality of our design. We wanted the project to be sensitive to its surroundings and feel familiar.
Perspective Plans Present + Future
Although we understood it was import for the play space to be adaptable it was also important for us to provide something that was permanent and that would contribute to the communities sense of identity,
Perspective Sections
The raised walkway and beginnings of a permanent garden were incorporated in the design in direct response to the site’s natural climate and physicality. This proposal blurs the distinction between play and education and creatively combines the two to provide a space which can empower and provide a feeling of safety.
Sensory Play Components
We did not want to favour one sense over the other and instead created multi-use and flexible components that allowed the children to decide for themselves how they wished to interact with the architecture, which allowed the design to be more inclusive.
Exploded Axo
We specifically choose re-useable and readily available materials for low-cost and ease of construction. The modular design is easily adaptable and can be built in a number of configurations to the changing site.
Construction and Water Details
The modular nature and construction details were integral to the design. This allowed us to experiment and add water as a new sensory element that is collected and transported by the structural bamboo frames.
