The concept behind any building, product or furniture piece is the idea from which it is originally "conceived." In some instances, these designs represent a unique aesthetic statement in contrast to the surrounding area or are derived from a simple aesthetic statement. In architectural school/design firm or practice we spend ample time reflecting on the concept of any design. Finding a concept becomes pretty essential in academics, while it may be portrayed in various forms during learning and exploring architecture- a concept in itself is a simple yet complex chain of thoughts that is driven through personal, academic and external factors. Technically it refers to the design, function and construction of an intervention based on abstract ideas or concepts. Conceptual architecture is based on the idea of shaping abstracted elements created by an individual. It’s not geared towards a specific purpose but rather to try to convey how building design can shape one's life in order to change mindsets and/or promote certain ideas. This discipline drives all building and design typologies into phases of massive creation, imagination and modularity. " A concept can give a proper direction and sense to any project, it is the essence and soul of a design." Conceptual architecture is a form of architecture that emphasizes the significance of ideas rather than the real end product. It is characterized by an introduction of ideas or concepts from outside of architecture, often as a means of expanding the field of architecture. An architectural concept can be experienced and explained in multiple ways. It can be expressed in words, images, feelings, aspirations and atmospheres relating to that concept. A concept may start with one or two conceptual elements, but as it develops into a complete image it has the ability to expand and impact a project in numerous ways. Conceptual architecture is a process of shaping the sediment or detritus of ideas and thoughts, forming it into an architectural masterpiece. The discipline is not limited by definition nor is it necessarily dependent on the overarching opinion of what constitutes art, culture or even design - but rather how spatial thinking responds to, extends or uses that idea. One example of an architectural concept might be: A response to site: “A house of the landscape” (Hans Hollein) Another example might be: A question or investigation: “How can architecture investigate the idea of unfolding through time?”(Juhani Pallasmaa) Alternatively, it could be ambition or provocation ( technical, social , political) Img 2: Purgatorium - Winner of No Man’s Island competition How does conceptual architecture affect the design industry? In the realm of conceptual architecture, exploration of new frontiers, infrastructures, master plans, individual spaces and details without the real-world constraints can produce radical ideas. Conceptual architecture can take on many forms and methodologies. In this context, despite the variety of possibilities available to us, digital technology is shaping up to be one of the most promising routes forward in reshaping our understanding of how we create spaces that are shared by everyone. In addition to creating new digital models, these technologies also allow for inclusive and accessible spatial visualization. They are even permeating traditional architectural frameworks and becoming more ubiquitous and pervasive than ever before. Increased interest in the impact these technologies are having, and will have, in our daily lives has rapidly expanded the use of these tools in architecture schools, small, independent firms and international, corporate practices. From augmented reality to 3D printing - a lot of architectural projects these days use various digital tools in the design and fabrication processes. Conceptual Architecture holds an interdisciplinary position between real and digital design. It offers a middle ground between physical environments (built projects) and virtual ones, as it connects technology with architecture in order to take designs to the next level. With technology taking architecture to new heights, the future of conceptual architecture may be more real than we can comprehend! Architecture competitions Conceptual architecture is closely related to architecture/design competitions as it initiates the first stage of any design project. Hence, architectural competitions are a great way to find creative design enthusiasts who not only have the relevant skills for designing and developing projects but who also share their vision regarding the problems affecting our society today. Architectural competitions offer a wide array of conceptual ideas that have the potential to be utilized in built projects.
