Humans with their evolutionary instinct developed communities and methods of keeping the community together. Entertainment and its forms were initially the products of celebration after a good hunt or an achievement within the group. As our primary activities were civilized as hunter-gatherers entertainment and enjoyment became a crucial part of our daily lives. From this era to the present humans have developed numerous forms of entertainment, for instance, dancing, playing music, engaging in outdoor/indoor games etc. These traditional forms have evolved immensely since their inception and continue to grow as primary interests and occupations. Img 1: Dice games are seeing a revival, thanks to collectors and the internet (Credits: M.A. SRIRAM)Several tabletop games played today date back to ancient times, such as chess, go, pachisi, backgammon, mahjong, mancala, and pick-up sticks. In early modern times, the rules of these games were not codified, and their features gradually evolved and changed as a result of adapted learning from earlier times. Because of this, these games are not considered to have had a designer or to have been the result of a design process in the modern sense. With the advent of commercial game publishing in the late 19th century, many games that had previously evolved from ancient games became commercial properties, with custom scoring pads and preprepared material. As technological oddities at arcades or science fairs increased, gaming evolved into one of the world's most lucrative entertainment industries. What is game design? The art of game design involves applying design and aesthetics to create a game for entertainment, education, or exercise. The principles of game design can be applied to board games, card games, dice games, casino games, role-playing games, sports, video games, war games, or simulation games. It also involves research contributions from game theory, gamification, storytelling, probability, decision making and many more aspects that enable or impact playing games. While designers continue to research and add to other forms of games, the boom in mobile technology in the game industry has seen an enormous inclination towards video games and opened the doors for next-generation gamers. Img 4: Computer gaming has taken the game and design industry to the next level Elements of game design Game design is the process of developing an idea for a game and seeing it through to its completion. Most people associate game design with video games, but it involves a variety of games (board games, card games, video games, etc.). A lot of elements go into designing a game. Developer Robert Zubek defines game design by breaking it down into the following elements: • Gameplay, the interaction between the player and the mechanics and systems• Game mechanics, mechanics which are the guidelines and gadgets in the sport• Character and Narrative design• Level design• Player experience, which is how users feel when they're playing the game.Trends in game design• Virtual realityVirtual reality allows gamers to experience full-blown immersion while gaming. To fully implement the technology, some basic issues need to be addressed. For example, some studies have shown that when players play VR games for extended periods of time, there is a time limit issue that causes nausea. Designers also have to deal with spatial constraints. However, VR is already on the road to revolutionizing game design in combination with other technologies. Img 5: A player using the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset and associated controllers to control a game (Wikipedia)• Augmented realityAugmented reality is the fusion of game images and audio content with the user's environment in real-time, helping to create an artificial environment. In the game industry, AR is used to create a game zone within an existing artificial environment. This technology is known to overwhelm users if used on a smartphone, tablet or gaming system.Img 6: The game Pokemon Go pioneered to be the most played augmented reality game a few years back In addition to these trends, motion control, portability, graphics, screen power, and esports are the most upcoming trends in game design. Competitions The future of game development looks promising with more realistic environments and situations that would work with professions like architecture, interior design, cinematography, graphic design and many more. Moreover, few game designers and software developers are onto extraordinary feats of running real land/money trade in simulated environments with detailed and real-time data into games. To enable such innovations and explorations game design competitions are the next opportunity.
