The web address name of the competition says Aloft but the cover image says Aflot. What is the correct name of the competition?

Hi Chris, Thank you for bringing this to our attention. The correct name is Aloft, we have modified the cover image and a few details in the programme too. Do check the same!

The max FAR says 1 and the site is 7878.83 sq.m, meaning this would be the maximum program area. But the program states that the spaces to live are to be 30% of the total program. There are to be 100 dwelling units of 50 sq.m, this equals 5,000 sq.m. At 30% this would be 16,667 sq. m. How are we to determine the program area?

Hello Chris, 30% of 7878.83sqm (total area) is 2363.65 sqm. Could you please explain the 16,667 figure? Nevertheless, we have decided to provide 40% area i.e. 3151.5 sqm to dwellings, which will cover 60 units of 50 sqm each. They can be distributed vertically as per your design. Please refer to the revised program in the brief. Moreover, you are free to utilise the 50% of ground coverage on-site for spaces of temporary intervention/recreation.

Thank you for the response. The program stated 100 dwelling units at 50 sq.m is 5,000 sqm and was to be 30% of the total program (before it was changed). In other words, 5,000 is 30% of 16,650 sqm. The math: 100 (units) X 50 sqm = 5,000 sqm | If 5,000 sqm (area of units) is 30% of the total program, that means the total area is 5,000 X 3.33 (30% X 3 + 10% at .33 = 100% or 3.33) = 16,650 sqm.

Height restriction of the total intervention = 20 m. The section under ‘Objectives’, ‘Safety’, states “The increased height calls for safety measures employed in public spaces and open areas.” This statement does not seem to reflect the 20m height limit. Also, the apparent program area requirement of 16,667 sq.m. would not fit well within the height limit, not to mention the need for sunlight and open space at the ground level.

The purpose of the competition is to design an elevated (aloft) neighbourhood that is raised from the ground at a certain height i.e. a minimum of 5m & maximum is up to the participants. The height limit of 20m is given as per the site context for a mixed-use typology. Including safety measures is a design/technical consideration for high buildings. However, you are free to design an intervention with a height below 20m.

On a side note, I like the competitions you provide and the model you use to implement them. But some friendly advice, a better job needs to be done vetting them to eliminate errors and the need for questions like below. Every time I look at a competition, there are always errors, by the time I get to the bottom of them, they may not interest me anymore, not to mention the loss of faith in a well-run competition. I don’t mean this to be rude and I am sure you have heard something like this before.
