Recycled Architecture and Adaptive Reuse
Human activities have created a lot of waste in the process of development of cities. Architects and constructors are undeniably responsible for this as bulk of the waste is contributed by the construction industry.
Recycling and adaptive reusing are modern initiatives taken for waste reduction in urban cities. It aims to promote environmental sustainability by substituting raw material input and redirecting waste output out of the economic system. It reduces pressure on the economy and has a positive impact on the environment as well. Recycling or upcycling of materials and structures have now started to become popular in architecture as an alternative to the mass production of components in construction.
The contest aims to open a dialogue that fosters the culture of recycling and reuse through stories, accounts or even observations.
Questions
- What is recycled architecture?
Using recycled material in architectural practices has various benefits. How is recycled material used? Where is it used? What are the benefits?
- What is adaptive reuse architecture?
The trend of revisiting the function of a building which it was specifically devised for, has been on the rise. (Eg. A factory converted into an office). What is the theory behind this? How can you repurpose an existing structure for new use?
- What are materials used in recycling?
When a building is brought down, the debris is treated, sorted and made available for new purposes. How are recycled materials in architecture treated? What are the different types of materials? Understanding the material and its properties?
- How to use recycled material to create architectural elements?
Various components of design can be created using these architectural by-products on various levels. What are these elements? How are they used in design and executed?
- List adaptive reuse architecture projects?
Disused or abandoned old buildings can be reused while conserving resources and its historic value (Eg. The Chapel on the Hill; Forest-in-Teesdale, United Kingdom). Name some of these projects? How are the re-designed and planned? How are these executed?
- Name some architects who are practicing ‘recycled architecture’?
Architects are now adopting various sustainable techniques in their designs. Enlist a few of these practices and methods to incorporate recycled material in buildings?
- How to create recycled buildings?
Technology increases material lifespan drastically. Conversely, what are some of the emerging techniques to recycle these materials? What are the techniques used to install these materials in buildings?
Deliverables
Participants shall deliver a written article of about 1000 - 1500 words with no more than 3 images, in a cohesive piece that answers the above questions or arguments presented. A cover of size [2000px x 1000px] must also be uploaded with the writing submission.
The images must be copyright free or the participant must own the rights of the images used.
How to submit?
