Resilient Architecture
Resilience is a strategy to enhance the ability of a building, facility, or community to both prevent damage and to recover from damage to the function that it is designed for. We cannot design for every unpredictable event, but we can make sure our buildings and cities are built to withstand these disruptions.
Resilient design is the intentional design of buildings, landscapes, communities, and regions in order to respond to natural or manmade disasters as well as long-term changes caused by climate change. In this approach, adaptive strategies are often weighed over mitigation.
Understanding what resilience is and developing knowledge of its application can help us create sustainable cities for the future.
The brief aims to further the use of resilience in buildings through stories, accounts and observations.
Questions
-
What is resilient architecture?
Certain buildings are designed to enhance their ability to recover from damage. How does a building recover after a disturbance or interruption? How to determine if the building is a resilient building? What are the benefits of resilience in design?
-
How do you design resilient architecture?
Different layers of architecture should work in harmony to withstand intense natural and manmade disasters. What are the aspects of designing a resilient building/project? Describe the steps and approaches. Discuss various strategies through which they can be implemented.
-
What are the design principles?
There are some fundamentals that must be considered before designing resilient buildings for various purposes. What are the principles and fundamentals one should consider before designing them?
-
What are the different techniques used in such architecture?
The execution of a building is as crucial as its planning. Different strategies lead to different outcomes. What are the techniques used to execute a resilient design? How is the execution process planned or sequenced? How are resilient systems re-installed post-calamity?
-
What are the categories of resilient architecture?
Some known categories are disaster-resilient architecture, climate-resilient architecture, etc. What is disaster resilient architecture? What is climate-resilient architecture? What are some unknown categories that represent resilience in architecture?
Deliverables
Participants shall deliver a written article of about 1000 - 1500 words with no more than 3 images, in a cohesive piece that answers the above questions or arguments presented. A cover of size [2000px x 1000px] must also be uploaded with the writing submission.
The images must be copyright free or the participant must own the rights of the images used.
