A: Windhoek has experienced significant rural-urban and urban-urban migration in the last few years, especially since independence (1990). Due to an imbalance in demand and supply, most of these migrants belong to the middle class or poor and food-insecure households. Poverty is thus widespread in Namibia and Windhoek but is unevenly distributed and polarized. The site is located amidst educational buildings and facilities for middle-income groups. It is at a distance of 15kms from urban areas of the city such as Samora Machel (Goreangab, Katutura and Wanaheda), Tobias Hainyeko (Okuryangava) and Moses Garoëb (Hakahana) which consist of informal settlements and are food insecure. By proposing the prospect of urban farming in this area we aim to generate ideas that balance the situation of food supply. The soil type on the site is Leptosol and we acquire the site images through google earth, so unfortunately the resolution might have been compromised. But you can refer to those images for overall site context and the CAD file for the topography of the site.
